The story about this bike test on KTVU this morning included a requirement to institute bike etiquette training. Interesting that the feel this is necessary based on the previous experience with bikers crowding out or bumping into commuters on the trains. It would be nice to think they could make this work, but the success will depend in part on bikers ability to coexist with regular commuters who take up a fraction of the space a biker requires on the train.

As a cyclist who occasionally takes his bike on BART, I am very much aware of the crowding of trains and try to take the least crowded car. My main problem has been dealing with riders who refuse to acknowledge the designated bike area near the door, and persist in standing in that space, preventing me from getting my bike out of the way of other riders. It's a two-way street, of course. I am wary of bikes during the crowded commute hours. It doesn't seem to make sense. And asking bikers to not board a crowded train isn't really going to work. Who wants to stand on a BART platform for an extra 20 minutes?
