Laptop Program and Porn

Original post made by Mike, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Sep 23, 2008

Does anyone have any advice on keeping porn away from kids? If one or more of your children are in the laptop program at one of Pleasanton schools, they have a laptop computer. I went to Apple and asked how to prevent the kids from viewing porn, and they didn't have anything that made sense. For example, you can enter the websites your children can view, and everything else will be blocked. That's not a practical option for obvious reasons.

When kids are on the school's network, they are subject to the filters the school district puts on all computers. When kids are in your home, you need to make sure that your internet filters are set so that they cannot access porn while at home. When they are in an area where public WiFi access is avaliable, students can access whatever that network allows them to access. That's left up to you...hopefully you've either talked to your kid about what's right and what's not, and if you don't trust them, make sure that you don't let them take their computer to a place where there are no filters to access whatever they want.

Consider purchasing a filtering program such as Net Nanny. These kind of programs normally have filter updates like anti-virus programs so that you don't have to make the filters yourself. Additionally, you need to be checking up on your kid's internet use (they should have a computer login that doesn't have administrative rights). Don't install a filter program and then think that is enough. There's some good information available online regarding talking with your kids about internet usage, how not to give away personal information, etc.

Please contact your Rep. and ask that she/he support S 1738 (Biden-Hatch) Child Protection Act. It has passed the Senate and has moved on to the House. The Biden-Hatch Child Protection Act will protect from online predators.

Thank you.

I went to the Apple store and the employee did not suggest Net Nanny, so I"m wondering if it's compatible with Apple computers....
