Beware - Fundraising Ripoff

Original post made by Ken in South Pleasanton, Downtown, on Jul 22, 2009

I just received a call from a fundraising group asking for donations that would be used to send CARE packages to our Servicemen and Servicewomen serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. When I asked what percent of my donation would be used to provide these care packages I was transferred to a supervisor (the caller said he had not been given that information).

The supervisor told me that 20% is used for the packages and 80% is used for continued fundraising. THIS IS A RIPOFF scam, using our dedicated Servicemen and Servicewomen to pull dollars from your pockets.

If you want to help by sending packages, contact Camp Parks or contact Blue Star Mothers ( This way your donation will get to those who deserve it and won't go to support a huge self-serving telephone money-grabbing scam. Always ask a donation requestor what percent actually makes it to the cause. You'll be surprised at how little actually makes it past the greedy hands of the solicitors.

Well, the unemployment rate in Pleasanton is ony 4%, so it seems that 4% of Pleasanton is venting their frustration and anger all day long on this forum?

And most of them are conservatives!

Ken, this is no different from the calls you might get soliciting money for police or firefighter funds. Just ask the person calling if they are a cop or firefighter and listen to the click as they hang up. The sad story is that police and fire departments actually use these creeps to solicit for funds since they figure keeping 20% while doing nothing is a good deal.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I hope it does not take away from your willingness to donate to charities- sometimes all it take sis one bad experience to lose that trust and wish to give/share in your good fortune

Thanks for the warning

Reply to Cindy,
Got a job. Work from home. Doing quite well. Don't listen to FOX or AM radio (reception is terrible in Pleasanton, you should know). I think it is Cholo we should be worried about.
Salvation Army, Toys-4-Tots, your local church if you attend...all good recipients of my and others generosity. Over 80%or more of the value of the donations make it to the recipients. Too bad about Pleasanton Police and Fire being so desperate...however, guess even tele-solicitors need a job these days. Just ask the question about what percent of your donation makes it to the intended target, get the answer, then make up your own mind about how well your money is spent. I wonder what the answer would be if we asked that question of our legislators? Probably below 20%.

How can any of you dolts posting on this forum possibly have an issue with Ken bringing this information to your attention.
Granted, the detractors on this site probably never donate a dime to our servicemen and women, but the rest of us might benefit from knowing this.
It's amazing who crawls out from under the rocks daily to find fault in anyone providing useful information. If it doesn't apply to you, move on quietly.
