As Councilmember Kathy Narum steps down from the dais for the last time this evening, she leaves behind a legacy of more than twenty years of service dedicated to her community. Each of us has benefited from her thoughtful consideration of issues, being there when an item needed clarification, and her careful attention to detail. We might not always have agreed, but colleagues and residents alike have always been treated with respect.


Her focus has consistently been on what is best for the city. A lunch date with Kathy often includes an impromptu chat with a resident who recognizes her and stops to converse about a particularly concerning agenda item. I've never seen her put anyone off or make their issue seem of little importance. She's been there and been willing to work out any questions a resident might have.

I first met Kathy in her role as councilmember and liaison for Zone 7, when a group of us approached council about runaway water rates. What might have been an adversarial confrontation grew instead into a real friendship and her mentorship led me to become involved myself in civic affairs. Her own dedication is contagious that way, and I've seen her mentor young people and help them realize the importance of service to one's community.

I can't be there personally this evening to toss confetti, propose a toast, applaud vigorously, or deliver a personal hug, but I will be watching and listening to the accolades from others who have worked with her over the years as we all wish her the very best.

We are ever so grateful for all she's done for the citizens of this community and it is an honor indeed to have known her as a city official, and now just as my friend. I'll be watching for postcards from Kathy and Jeff as they enjoy having more time together for new travel and grandparenting adventures.
