This was a sad thing to be sure, but maybe somebody with knowledge can educate me as to why an accident victim was transported to Castro Valley when Stanford ValleyCare was just down the street? Does ValleyCare not have a trauma center, and if they don't then why?

Eden Hospital is the designated trauma hospital for southern Alameda County. Highland Hospital in Oakland is the other. These hospitals are better prepared to deal with severe trauma cases. If you take a severe trauma case to Valley Care they will transfer them to Eden.

Okay, Carl. He could have been stabilized at ValleyCare first and then transferred. Minutes might have saved his life. Maybe its time the valley had a trauma center of its own. I'm not a doctor, but don't minutes matter?

James, I'm not a doctor either, just stating what the protocols are for a severe trauma case of any kind. The county designated Highland and Eden Hospitals as adult trauma centers and Children's Hospital in Oakland as the Pediatric Trauma Center for all of Alameda County. The County provides funds to purchase the best equipment and to staff personnel to deal with many different types of cases. The survival rate is much higher at a trauma center than at a typical ER. Not sure of the injuries to this ped but they must have felt they were pretty severe so they transported to Eden. Not sure who you contact about getting Valley Care upgraded to a Trauma center but I think it is a very big hill to climb. Good luck.
