DSRSD candidates running uncontested this year

Original post made on Oct 15, 2020

DSRSD switched to new by-division elections this year, but two of the three Board of Directors seats will be on the ballot uncontested while the third saw no candidates come forward during the filing period this summer.

Since no one else filed for the area/division 1 and area/division 3 seats, Rubio and Halket have secured those seats. They will be appointed to the DSRSD board (as directors--not supervisors) by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. They don't need campaign websites.

The problem is finding someone for area/division 5 (East Dublin). No one from this area expressed an interest in the seat. If someone who is not particularly interested in the position (and may not have a suitable background) has to be cajoled to put his/her name forward for consideration, will he/she be an effective director?

Attorney Scott Rafferty filed suit against DSRSD and similar small districts to force them to convert to artificial area/division-based elections. He did not take into account the fact that it has always been difficult to find qualified people who are willing and able to serve on the DSRSD board. Even when seats are contested, there is overwhelming voter apathy. This is not the way it should be, but this is the way it is now. I hope people will come to realize the importance of these positions.
