Rep. Eric Swalwell to Speak at the Youth Environmental Action Summit of the Tri-Valley

Youth from Livermore, Pleasanton, and Dublin are invited to meet Rep. Eric Swalwell at the Youth Environmental Action Summit of the Tri-Valley, September 7th from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Multi-purpose room at Amador Valley High School, 1155 Santa Rita Rd, Pleasanton, CA. Students from middle school to undergraduates are invited to attend this free, engaging, and empowering summit.

The Summit will open with Rep. Eric Swalwell as keynote speaker. He will address challenges and solutions for the environmental issues that youth are facing as the world changes. He will field questions from youth and listen to their concerns. Closing the Summit will be Dan Linehan, author, editor, and scientist, who will offer a multi-media sample of how science can inform activism and will address how youth can make an impact on issues they care about.

Attendees will have the chance to visit booths covering a variety of topics before making a selection to attend in a breakout session. Presenters include:
Ashley MacClure, Kaiser Permanente Health, on “ Climate Change’s Impact on Health”
Tony Green, Citizens’ Climate Lobby, on “ Toolkit for Effective Presentations”
Darrell Davis, Safe Routes to Schools, on “ Get Around Green & Clean”
Local Leaders of the 21st Century, on “How to Start a Local Leaders Club at your School”
Kate Roney, Schools for Climate Action, on “How to Get Your Student Council and School Board to Pass a Climate Resolution”
Lauren Londono, on “Veganism and Sustainable Food Systems”
Chanddeep Singh, Living Arroyos, on “Get Involved in Watershed Stewardship”

Following the Breakout Sessions and Snacks (donated generously by our sponsors), the Summit attendees will convene to debrief on the important take-aways from each session, and next steps to take Action on their topic. A Youth Activist Panel will share their experiences with activism and host a Q & A time. Participants will leave with real tools and contacts for implementing their action projects in the coming school year.

Adults can support the Summit through sponsorship. We welcome in kind donations, raffle prizes, and monetary donations--all tax deductible.

I don’t like Eric’s politics, or his career in politics, but I think this is a good event he’s supporting. Nice job being accessible to the youth and trying to get them involved in a cause

I love when he said: “I will be bold, without the bull.” ...then crickets. His disingenuous attempts to look relevant, forward looking, or scientific (a true discussion of climate crisis, the new label, should include the other side of the debate), fall on deaf ears. Americans should never forget his attempt to aid, abet, and literally tear our country apart over his ‘Russian Collusion Hoax.

As for the program, debate, discussion, and the diversity of thought is always welcome.

So, is he going to speak with the children about his social-media mocking of the Odessa community after the recent shooting, for not being able to subdue the attacker before several people were killed? So maybe this guy is held to a lower standard - that he can get away with that kind of rhetoric, and still be held up as someone whose opinions our children should value? Would the people of Odessa invite him?

Keep him away from our youth is my advice. They have enough bad examples.

I wish I was a youth again and could attend. I would ask the lawyer politician who really knows nothing about the environment...that if the sea is rising due to climate change, then why did the Obama's just buy a mansion on Martha's Vineyard next to the ocean? Maybe the Russians made them do it :>)

Kathleen,
Yes, the risk is present, and same can be said for Republican candidates. We should still encourage youth engagement in politics because it forces both parties to participate eventually (even if to spew equally accurate but positional perspective points).

@James Michael wrote “....that if the sea is rising due to climate change, then why did the Obama's just buy a mansion on Martha's Vineyard next to the ocean?”

Because the rate at which the oceans are rising due to climate change is about 2 cm per decade. Not enough to wash away the Obamas’ new home in their lifetime or yours. But a very significant and fast rate of change from a climate science perspective.

"Wombat" just confirmed climate change is not a factor in all of our life's due to the slow rise in sea levels.

@Michael Austin

What I wrote is that the rate of ocean level rise is 2 cm per decade. Rising ocean levels are not the only consequence of global warming.

"Wombat" what are the other consequences of global warming?

Thanks, Wombat, that's the point I was trying to make. It's nice when a PhD has your back.

@Michael Austin

There are many ways in which climate change will human life which have been been well described in the news. If you’re really interested in a good, accessible overview of the subject from a scientific perspective, I recommend reading “Climate Change, Evidence & Causes” by the U.K. Royal Society and the US National Academy of Sciences.
