Dublin raises LGBTQ pride flag; council changes course after outcry

Original post made on Jun 6, 2019

The rainbow LGBTQ pride flag was raised at Dublin Civic Center on Tuesday night, shortly after the Dublin City Council unanimously voted to fly it for Pride Month in June.

I have no problem with the flag. But how can their community be considered "marginalized" when they get their way on everything?

"they get their way on everything"

Really? You think LGBTQ people get their way on everything? Despite the fact that they didn't the first time? Despite the comments made against them by public comment the first time? Despite the fact that in 26 other states it is still largely legal to be fired for being gay without any other cause?

Frankly I see this as the equivalent of 5 years after the Civil Rights Amendments saying "they get their way on everything."

I cant personally relate to the situation and the further into the alphabet on letters the more confused i am....with that said, i think its important to recognize the human aspect of these individuals and commit to respecting them on the same human rights level the rest of us expect to be treated on; and on this im sure they are not all treated like everyone else, and because of that its important to show support.

How about flying the flags of our veterans for a month, maybe recognize and show a little more support to the people who have given up a lot to make this a great country. Not going to criticize the city’s decision but they are opening up a big can of worms, be prepared to install more flagpoles!!

Do you think the LGPTQ community should get in line in front of special needs adults, our veterans, black lives matter, holocost survivors, the American Indians, and any other special interest groups. I don’t see somebody’s sexuality as a good reason to hang a flag on the flagpole. I just don’t get it. Sounds like politics of trying to please everyone so no one has hurt feelings. Help me understand this please.

What about equal rights for women flag????? Women make less money, are under threat regarding repro rights, are subject to discrimination and harassment in the workplace, are at risk of sexual violence, to name a few. Women were the last to be able to vote. ..... hint!
I think women’s ’ rights and protection from violence flag should come before a rainbow flag on a government building.
Besides, when LGBTQ quit walking around naked, waving penis flags or wearing S&M leather at Pride parades, maybe I’ll support the rainbow flag more readily along with the rest.

To Sid,
Do you get out of the suburbs much? Does not sound like you spend much time in SF which I do daily. And obviously you ain’t a woman who has experienced threat of physical violence or who makes a smaller pay check than your male counterpart.
Yeh, I’m the liberal here and you are in a PC bubble. California has gone so far left of liberal, it’s sad.

Yeah, I get to Oakland plenty. And I’m a white male so I can’t speak to your experience.

But your portrayal of LGBTQ as not deserving of a level of support because they’re “walking around naked” or judging what some people choose to wear to parades tells me who you are, and it isn’t liberal. It’s pathetic.

Listen to yourself but rephrase it.

"LGBTQ people make less money [from hiring discrimination and in general], are under threat regarding repro rights [in adoption rights around the US at the least], are subject to discrimination and harassment in the workplace [yup], are at risk of sexual violence [yup], to name a few."

You have no empathy for their struggles or you are willfully ignorant of them, because you complain about symbolic gestures towards them as if supporting them means not supporting women for the same problems. So yeah, I don't accept you in my party.

Yeh, SJD, then raise the women flag first. I’m disappointed the LGBTQ does not support and include straight women along with the rest.
And it’s not what people wear as much as please, wear something...anything and leave the jock socks at home in the privacy of your home. Jeese, maybe I should walk around with a big vagina hat and see if anyone congrats me.
I hope you are as concerned with health care, affordable housing, homelessness, etc as you are about rainbows. You sound young and naive

"raise the women flag first."

"Who I identify with was not appreciated first so therefore other people should not be appreciated." This is what you sound like.

"does not support and include straight women along with the rest."

Please, you know nothing about this movement, and clearly you know nothing about me because I put in the work and the money on housing, transportation, and healthcare advocacy.

"It's not about what people wear"
First off, you said it was just minutes ago. Second of all, using the fringe to justify tepid support for the average person in a group that is discriminated against is classic deflection.

"I heard a woman call a fetus 'a leech', so we shouldn't defend abortion rights."
"I saw a cyclist run a stop sign so we should not build any more bike lanes."
"I saw a gay person naked, so we shouldn't put a flag up for them."

There absolutely is a heirchy to causes. And yes veterans trump other special interests as they protect the ability for those other special interests to express and promote their rights. After veterans I think all other causes fall into an equal opportunity for rotational promotion.

Wow SJD, chill out. You sound like an unhappy person. I’m voicing my opinion and you are really angry in your responses. I’m done with this back and forth. Maybe you should move out of the Bay Area and relax. As a native, I long ago accepted all the PC and activists with an open mind and grain of salt. Btw, ITMFA

“Just chill out, it’s just other people’s experiences of oppression I’m belittling”

“I’m just voicing my opinion that the fringe of a group gives me the right to judge everyone in it.”

No, I won’t put up with it in my backyard. I will proudly call you out on it. Maybe it is effective in getting you to reconsider, maybe not. But I’m not letting it stand, no way.

To the people on here who want to honor other people worthy of honoring:
Go do it. I support you.

To those who question the need to appreciate the LGBTQ community or somehow think honoring them means dishonoring veterans or something:
Go reevaluate.

And that’s all.

Like I said the can of worms has been opened, looks like Dublin is going to need a lot more flagpoles!! As a veteran I’ll be looking for my 30 days of equal flag time!

There are only TWO FLAGS that should fly at all Federal and State government facilities: the US Flag and the State Flag.

All other flags can be flown by private entities, then we can stop sniping about who's flag gets to fly.

This is such a silly argument, especially when you talk about LGBTQ...whatever...grow up and fly your own flags on your own private property.

Stop your temper tantrums.

@Melinda :”I don’t see somebody’s sexuality as a good reason to hang a flag on the flagpole. I just don’t get it. Sounds like politics of trying to please everyone so no one has hurt feelings. Help me understand this please.”

Gee, Melinda, I’m not LGBTQ myself, but isn’t it obvious that one’s sexuality in itself isn’t really the issue with the LGBTQ movement or this particular flag flying but the fact that there is discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community for no other reason than they are LGBTQ? I needed to explain that to you? You couldn’t figure that out yourself?

As for this particular case of raising 3rd party flags on government property, I agree that there should be an official policy involving a council vote before any commemorative flag can be flown at the Civic Center and that no 3rd party requests to fly particular flags should be considered.

If Dublin is going to cave in to every Tom, dick, and Harry 3rd party flag flying wannabes maybe they should put the developers who bought the city at the head of the list for the “ flag of the month “ club!

There is the Female Gender, there is the Male Gender.
All other self proclaimed something else are just that.

I personally feel this is bull-hit. What honor has the LGBTQ done to deserve flying their flag in such a position?
