Merritt property: A low priority

Original post made on Apr 20, 2019

The Pleasanton City Council in effect has rejected a developer's bid to move forward soon with building a 90-home project for seniors 55 and older on the largely vacant, 45-acre Merritt property on Foothill Road.

For one I'd like to see some resolution to the Merritt Property fiasco. The earlier proposal of 84 homes was welcomed and approved by our HOA , but the developer dealt a raw deal in switching to 93 homes which was defeated by a city wide vote in 1999.

Now the same developer asks us for approval of a 95 home plan (92 + 3 by Merritt), a very vague plan and empty of specifics, and greater numbers than the 1999 plan that was rejected.

My problem is the empty orchard has drainage problems, rodents, and diseased trees, the biggest being the drainage issue. Now once again after a wet winter many of the north side Foothill Knolls residents are faced with replacement of fences as the land they are built on is again undermined by winter storm uncontrolled runoff, typically a $1500-2000 minimum cost per Home Owner.

Either the city, the property owner or the potential developer should correct this situation. As a 34 year resident I for one am tired of replacing fences and losing 5 more feet off my yard every few years.

I appeal to the city, let's get an honest development plan in place and if not at least correct the drainage issues, or give us all credit on our tax bills to replace fences caused by property owner or city negligence to act.

This property is extremely valuable real estate, million dollar plus homes will be built on it, so let's stop fooling around taking advantage of the adjacent home owners and city and get a real plan in place, who ever builds here will net millions of dollars! If not let them go elsewhere!
