Tens of thousands of people are expected at the eighth annual Bay Area Pet Fair this weekend at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton.
The event is the largest pet adoption event in North America and aims to save the lives of animals by clearing out Bay Area shelters.
Attendees can pick from more than 2,000 adoptable animals from more than 80 animal shelters and rescues.
The event starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. each day at the fairgrounds at 4501 Pleasanton Ave.

This is a wonderful event sponsored by Pet Food Express (PFE). PFE coordinates with the shelters, vendors and numerous outreach groups. It is fun to bring your pet, walk through the Fair Grounds, pick up product samples, watch and/or participate in the Dog Splash and hear Jackson Galaxy speak about Cats and Cat Care.
It’s a great time for everyone – whether you adopt a pet or not!
Except for the pit bulls.
Remember: NEVER adopt a pit bull. Some of them are fine, but many of them went vicious and attacked their owners, which is why they were dumped in the first place. Adoption agencies claim to “test” them but that is nonsense.
One attack by your dog against a neighborhood child can cost you your home equity in legal fees. In some cases, jail time for the owner.
Pleasanton has had a lot of pit bull attacks over the years. Let’s not add to them.
And no, you cannot “cure” a vicious pit bull with love. Once their predatory instincts kick in, they are no less dangerous than a mountain lion.
NEVER EVER ADOPT A PIT BULL!
If you adopt a kitten, please train it to stay inside your house, or your own property.
