Swalwell bill aims to prevent U.S. president, family from profiting off foreign powers

Original post made on Jul 24, 2018

The Tri-Valley's U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin), one of Congress's more vocal critics of President Donald Trump and many of the administration's international policies, has introduced a new bill to toughen federal regulations that aim to curb any U.S. president or vice president from receiving financial benefits from foreign powers.

Please can Swalwell work on fixing Social Security? It's a huge problem that won't go away until someone in Congress steps up as a leader to address the elephant in the room for all Americans.

Just one more bill proposed by Swalwell, which will be quickly cast aside. It might get him on TV, though.

Swalwell should concentrate his energies towards all of those corporations that are violating the National Do Not Call Registry.

This law breaking multi-Billion dollar industry have informed Eric Swalwell and his house colleagues, "catch us if you can".

Swalwell, this is where you should be front and center. Enforcing the law.

Shake off your Pelosi obsession of chore boy for her!
Pelosi will be a footnote in history following the midterms.

How about a bill that taxes campaign packs, superpacks, etc equally for every tax that gets put on individuals and no payment for failing to balance a budget.

This guy is a joke, he owes trump a thank you letter for allowing him to build a career on delivering nothing against the fear of trump in office.

Actually, expand this. Apply it to all public figures, make it applicable to ex presidents and vps as well and include charities and non profits.

I think if Mr. Swallwell is serious, and I have a herd time taking anything he suggest seriously, he should include all members of congress in this. Lets not just report foreign investment but all gifts or services of value. The next time a lobbiest takes you to lunch or spends time with you or a member of your staff I would like to see that as public record. Political lobbies with influence in congress is out of hand. So lets make Mr. Swallwell and his cohorts report every dinner, fountain pen and fact finding trip just as he suggest. Lets also have this report posted on line so everyone can read it.

Here is another idea for the integrity minded Swallwell. Require members of congress to post all campaign promises on line and to update that list weekly with which have been accomplished. We may then end the pie in the sky promises on election day, or at least have a real measuring tool at the next election.

This would be laughable if it weren't so pathetic. Swalwell is turning out to be an even bigger political hack than Fortney Stark, and is living up to his reputation as Pelosi's lap dog. One notices that he didn't introduce this legislation when Obama and the Clintons were profiting mightily from their positions. Hillary Clinton sold a quarter of our uranium to (drum roll here) the Russians, in return for hundreds of millions of dollars into the (another drum roll here) the Clinton Foundation. Also, former President Bill Clinton has raked in tens of millions, perhaps hundreds of millions, of dollars in "speaking fees" from foreign countries. One also notices he didn't introduce this legislation after Obama was caught in a open microphone to Putin "Just be patient, I'll have more flexibility after the election." If Swalwell really wanted to make a difference he would introduce some Drain The Swamp legislation to wean Congress members off bribes (er, political contributions) from lobbyists; and to bar Congress members from making millions as lobbyists when they leave Congress.

Geez can't you just grow up and get on with the peoples real work like immigration reform, elimination of the sanctuary state in Calif, goofy regulation elimination, job creation, reducing spending and taxes, etc.

"Hillary Clinton sold a quarter of our uranium to (drum roll here) the Russians...."

Um, no. The US mine in question merged with a Canadian firm that was later bought by a Russian company with a 51% stake. Hillary did not have veto power over that transaction. She sat on a 9-member committee that approved that transaction, and that 9-member committee was just one of eight other US government committees that also had to (and did) approve the transaction. So in a nutshell, Hillary had about a 1/81 vote over the overall committee approval or disapproval of the transaction. But there's more: Neither Hillary nor the combined weight of all 9 committees had any actual veto power over the transaction. They only provided advice to the President, who was the only person with veto power. Finally, the fact that a US mine which merged with a Canadian firm which was bought by a Russian company doesn't mean that 20% of America's uranium actually went to Russia for the simple reason that no uranium can leave this country without an NRC export license, which the Russian company didn't have and was not going to get.

Swalwell relies solely on speculation. He promises us that there is evidence of collusion (not illegal by the way) but cannot produce it. He wants to put gun owners in jail. He wants our community to be overrun by illegal aliens. Next he will advocate to give voting rights to illegals. He is guilty of what he accuses Trump of- tearing the country apart by setting people against each other. Most people I meet in this area are sensible. Why anyone would vote for Swalwell is a mystery.

R,
I think you're hitting it on the head - this is about a personal vendetta, not about protecting the office. I could support this more if it weren't so tailored and blatantly apparent its specifically designed to target Trump, not the President, not Congress, not the Judicial branch. Just Trump.

To the point above, you want the "people's" support behind this, get complete transparency to political claims and execution against - put it online, Government elected officials metrics - may end up like baseball hitting averages where there is very little execution, but comparatively it is meaningful. Put every campaign dollar next to it with their overall campaign funds.

You want to take away foreign influence through private donations, funding campaigns, side projects/businesses, also fine - but make if for all politicians past, present, and future.

You can not like Trump and you can not like Swalwell - its not a pick a side. Swalwell is wasting his opportunity to represent his district and make meaningful contributions.

Jake: oh, what you blithering about? I merely posted the FACT of the margins that Swalwell won by. Clear majority and he'll win again, but same margins (my guess). Our President is President due to his minority base, so how could I complain, huh?

the publisher here and on danvillesanramon site allows all sides to post, but seems conservatives more likely to find this very very protected sandbox where anonymous readers can post.

And before you blow you load: I'm neither GOP or Dem; or left or right. I'm a reasonable moderate or in Calif election status speak: Decline To State' party.

Calif IS a Blue state by a wide margin. Unsure why GOP have such an issue with that? Kinda means majority have spoken (good or bad).

You want right or far right fringe elected: VOTE!

For all you Democrats that are going to continue the wonderful life, well being, and lucrative career of Swalwell, ask yourself: who is benefited? Don’t just vote party lines, vote for the individual that will provide us the best living conditions in the state of California. That’s what is important. Our state of being (California) is falling into disrepair. Does Swalwell have the least bit of interest in solving the issues? Or is it all about power and maintaining one’s lucrative career. You may be a hardcore Democrat, but is Swalwell’s behavior and work benefiting us? After all, we are all Californians, and must decide if we accept the present state of affairs.

Posted by Jake

SHale99- me blithering? Hardly. Perhaps you should read your comment again- slowly. Contrary to your assertion, you did not merely point out that Swalwell won by a large margin and predict that he likely would again. You implied that commenters should not criticize Swalwell because he will probably win re-election. Your comment was nonsensical, a non sequitur if you will. In other words, your conclusion does not logically follow from your observation. No politician is immune from criticism simply because he or she will likely prevail in the next election. You might also be surprised to learn that despite the undeniable fact that California leans far to the left 14 members of the California congressional delegation are Republicans. Guess what? Democrats in LA or SF do not vote in the 15th District so their voting preferences are immaterial.

Your assertion that you are a "moderate reasonable” person is belied by your rambling and emotional response.

Finally, I suggest you be more careful with your grammar and spelling. It is pretty pathetic

I've come to believe that people will hold their sports stars/teams more accountable than their political representatives.

If the Raiders/49ers were winless people would be demanding explanations and personnel changes. I've never heard someone justify a losing seasons by saying, "Well, it's not the teams fault...those other teams were doing everything they could to prevent them from winning. It's no big deal."

Quite the contrary.

As the elected Representative of CA15 Eric should be held accountable for his performance. He's made promises that have not just gone unfulfilled, but from what I can tell the issues have flat out been ignored. Promises like funds for BART that have a real and tangible impact to our district.

Think of Eric as the young hot-shot QB for your favorite team. He's doing commercials, interviews, endorsement deals. He's got the camera time and and the spotlight on him. He's enjoying the attention. However, back on the field the team is going 2-14. Perhaps a bit more time in the weight room and film room would be more appropriate to deliver the expected results.

In 2 out of 3 of his legislative terms he's produced 0 legislation, and the district has been largely overlooked in terms of federal support.

So, if you're a Democrat and you can't pull yourself to root for another team you could at least be open to the thought that there may be another Democrat who will step up more for the district than Eric...

Oh...and can you also help stop the high speed rail fiasco? WAY over budget, and the number of trains they plan to run (over 120 a day!, with a train every 6 minutes during peak AM and PM times) is ridiculous. And of course running them right through the heart of the last remaining marshlands in CA....so poorly designed - the route was done to get a large city - San Jose - on board....but ignores so many 'faults' in the route (pun intended).

While you are a 'federal' representative, you do represent CA. How about doing something BIG to help us with these 2 issues? Probably too busy building name recognition in order to someday run for Feinstein seat, or jump in the Governor's spot when Gavin moves on to greener pastures Federally?

You're right Michael....we, as a country, are not killing enough kids in schools, malls and churches.

To answer your other point, if you truly want to MAGA and go back to the 1950s, the top earners were paying 90%. Before that, they were paying 94%. That is what allowed this country to build the infrastructure that we are still using today. I'm only talking about taxing income now. If you want, we can take it a step further and have a wealth tax too, which is a tax on assets the 1% already own (most of this country and the businesses in it). A factory worker in those days made enough money to be the only bread winner and still be able to afford a house. Now, even with two very good incomes, a whole lot of families can't afford that. And please spare me the bs about "the billionaires will lose their drive to be successful". That's a tired ol' lie too. I've had the privilege of meeting a couple of these folks in my time and I can assure you that they aren't motivated by money. They are driven by accomplishments, results, power, and sometimes fame. Money is very much a secondary issue to them.

And you're wrong on this issue..again. Violence is a complicated problem in our society and banning/confiscating guns for those NOT involved with this accomplishes nothing - except to make you and Swalwell feel good. Time to get over the "guns cause violence" and "criminals are victims" silliness from the political left. You'll just end up with more lawless activity.

The Parkland school shooting was the result of school officials/law enforcement repeatedly letting Nikolas Cruz go/not criminally charging him - after he was a known threat. The "March for Our Lives" farce tried to blame all of it on the NRA and "assault weapons". Silly.

My view on gun deaths comes from my own life experience. I grew up in a country where nobody except the military had guns. Do you know how many people died because of gun shots each year? ZERO. Year after year it was ZERO! The bs happening in this country is NOT normal. Just continuing like nothing is wrong IS WRONG! How many of your children have to be shot for you to realize there is a problem here? Really, how many? I want a numerical answer. There are so many things that can be done to make guns safer but you and the NRA oppose everything, claiming "slippery slope" bs arguments. We already have the technology to keep guns out of the hands of crooks and to really find out if you are a "good guy with a gun" as you claim. Think of your cell phone. You probably need a 4 digit pin to unlock and use it. Why can't we have that installed on guns? Why do you keep opposing logical steps like that? I think it's because you are not a nice person and go around pissing people off and now you have to look over your shoulder all the time.

@Robert Adam

I knew that you would critique, judge, and raise your nose at my list of reading materials. That is just a small sample, but that was your intention, because you couldn’t conceive that someone would have that degree of resume to out perform yours. You clearly, based on your response and comments, haven’t a clue to what is going on globally. You liberals, and you have identified yourself clearly as a liberal, are shallow, uninformed, petty, and ignorant to the global realities confronting us today. Your tiny list of reading material clearly is embarrassing. Please don’t waste my time on your pathetic uninformed comments.

@ Jake Waters
First of all, don't use my name in your heading when posting your comments.

Yes, Jake. How can Reuters, Associated Press, the BBC, NPR, etc. can possibly compete with your list? Haha! I actually lived in a different country for 13 years and have friends and business contacts all over the world with whom I talk to every week. How can I possibly know what's going on? My sources are the most centrist that anyone can possibly find. The problem is that your wingnut party has moved so far to the right that the centrist point of view seems liberal to you. You have clan members and Nazis in your party. Wake up man!

Still waiting for anyone (looking at you Robert Adams) to provide the list of legislative accomplishments of Salwell.

Yeah, we've heard your resume of living in another country and the "centrist" news sources you peruse (snicker)...but lets stay on topic regarding this do-nothing from the democratic party shall we?

DKHSK still looking for someone to do his homework for him, as if googling Swalwell’s website is too much work for him.

Wow, all these diatribes on Swalwell. One only need to check (looking at you Dan) his margins of wins since his first election. And see how his name keeps coming up for 2020 higher office.

Clearly the naysayers here are in a the minority who did NOT vote or didn't vote Swalwell.

Still America: with exception of President, the most votes win. Hope the GOP rally their registered votes to actually VOTE because the DEMS will vote in high numbers. Uh oh.

Bravo sir! Although you're unfortunately a few years late to have halted the Clinton Foundation from receiving untold & unaccounted for BILLIONS of $$ foreign money to influence US policy.

But by all means waste some more of the taxpayers money on this nonsense.
