When we get on the road we are obliged to drive mindfully, to be ready to respond to the unexpected but also to avoid doing/being the unexpected. Over the past 50 years I have had some close calls on the freeway, and the common element, it seems to me, is the issue of scale. Bikes, cars, trucks and big rigs all on the same highway: money drivers, recreational drivers, impatient drivers, resentful drivers, family emergency drivers, ducking-the-police drivers, getting to work/home drivers — we try to account for all the possibilities inherent in this mix, but we are finite beings, and we miss a lot.
My heart goes out to all who suffered here.

It is sad to hear of another death that resulted from an insane law. Lane splitting should not be allowed. This is costing injuries, lives, traffic congestion, emergency response time, hospital and law enforcement time, court and legal system time and taxpayer money for the benefit of a few people being able to get through traffic congestion a little bit quicker than the rest of us and a lot more money for lawyers.

lane splitting should be illegal. It doesn't just affect motorcyclists but also affects everyone on the road.

Yes, lane splitting should be illegal. I watch for motorcycles all the time but sometimes they just appear, very loud and sometimes earsplitting, seemingly out of nowhere. The noise alone is jarring and it's hard to just keep cool and drive safely. Some cars move over to make room for them and that also makes a person uncomfortable with what they, the car and the motorcycle, might do.

What should be illegal is inattentive driving. Lane splitting motorcyclists get hit by cage drivers who change lanes suddenly without looking. Most car drivers are clueless to what is around them. They are self absorbed and only care about getting ahead any little bit that they can.

...and it should be outlawed in California.

California needs to make it illegal.

I am against lane splitting for this very reason. I get zipped by every day on my way to work. I don't "move over" because by the time you actually do that the driver is long past you so what is the point. I do try to hug the opposite side of the road and do visit the rear view mirror regularly but sometimes you just have a motorcyclist who is in too much of a rush and a dare devil driver and he/she just bogarts their way between and around vehicles just because they can and unfortunately I hear every day about these types of truly sad events. I doubt making it illegal will prevent hell bent drivers from behaving in a very aggressive manor. It's in their DnA. It is a risk they seem more than willing to take and a complete roll of the dice since you have to "assume" all vehicle drivers are actually paying attention to you and not what is in front of them and to the side of them and can read your mind at the same time about your intent on the road. Just doesn't happen. Be cautious and safe while on the road.

680 on the Sunol grade was at a full stop at 5:30am this morning - a motorcycle wipe out that appears to be linked to lane splitting. I do not believe it was a fatality accident, thank goodness. I do want to note that the lane splitting had nothing to do with congestion - at this time of the morning the traffic moves along at 65+ mph. Motorcyclists lane split at 70+ mph for the thrill of it or for whatever reason. Really stupid.....
