This is important neighbors. I belong to the last generation hit with polio in the U.S. When I was 12 years old a neighbor child fell victim of polio. She ended up in an iron lung. I visited her in the hospital. The iron lung made a big impression on me. I was first in line to get the Salk vaccine when it became available.

In 1952 more than 3,000 children died from polio. Another 50,000 had permanent disabilities.
