PUSD Coordinator of Communication & Community Engagement Takes Vulgar Shot

Original post made by Sue, Amador Estates, on Nov 1, 2015

On Friday the Coordinator of Communication & Community Engagement (who was brought into Pleasanton Unified School District by the former PUSD and now current superintendent of Castro Valley Unified) spent her last day in the office. The Coordinator (who has been paid $120,000 per year) left the district with a final shot of the hypocritical behavior found in the last administration. The Coordinator sent out her last E-Connect district wide wishing staff a good year, offering her new email at Milpitas Unified School District and a link to a meditation which was to vulgar to adequately explain. The quality of previous administration continues to effect staff morale not to mention how hypocritical the vulgar behavior is that has been demonstrated. I would like to thank the Interim Superintendent of the district and of Human Resources for their help in cleaning up what is a terrifically difficult situation.

Given the poor quality staff the previous superintendent hired, that is no surprise.

Can you copy and paste the email she sent along with URL of the embedded link that she sent out to all of the community?

I don't like to appear stupid, but both the intended meaning of, and language in, Sue's post has me scratching my head. Did Nichole Steward, who resigned last month, actually get fired, and is Sue thanking them for doing it? I don't know what "vulgar to adequately explain" means.

"vulgar" is in the ears of the beholder. Take a look yourself and judge. On her last day of employment Ms. Nicole Steward emailed out a video link (using district equipment and accounts while being paid). If you’d like to see it, go to youtube and search for "F That: A guided meditation". It is a comedic meditation video, telling you to acknowledge that "all that sh_t is F_ BS". The profanities continue during the video, including numerous F bombs, and pretty much every other vulgar curse word. To be fair, it's very innapropriate but not measurably more offensive than any other uncensored blue humor on the internet. It does, however, point to a broken administrative culture. Is the video "horrible"? I don't think so. Was it appropriate for a $120,000 / year staff member to send out to MANY on her last day as an employee of the district, using district resources? Definitely not.

Ms. Steward was closely tied to former Superintendent Ahmadi, and current Deputy Superintendent Cazares. Ms. Cazares herself has been accused of a profanity-laden outburst outside a school board meeting, yelling her own F Bombs directed at board trustees (who happen to be her boss’ bosses) while Ms. Steward stood by and laughed. Ms. Steward was groomed in a leadership culture where intimidation, retaliation, and fear were the norm. It's OK to drop F bombs and threaten, as long as you were "IN" with the Ahmadi/Cazares team. If you were out, however, you were TOAST! Now with Ahmadi gone and a new regime, Ms. Steward's disrespect of authority is the last gasp from the old crew. Or is it? Some forum posts on this site asked “why can’t PUSD attract good people”, citing the attrition at top levels. I suggest that the opposite is happening. Without the protection of Ahmadi, Cazares, and Faraghan the sidekicks are running for cover, to other districts.

Three professionals have been placed in charge by the board. Interim Superintendent Jim Hansen, Temporary Asst. Superintendent Micaela Ochoa, and interim HR leader Diane Howell. These three, hopefully, will put a stop to the atrocious behaviors. I am particularly impressed with Ms. Ochoa. Brains, and guts. Something new for our district office, it’s been quite a while! I hope these three stand tall and that the trustees back them. More importantly I hope the superintendent search finds a superstar. Someone who can help our district “grow up”.

@"Hear for Yourself" : "On her last day of employment Ms. Nicole Steward emailed out a video link (using district equipment and accounts while being paid). If you'd like to see it, go to youtube and search for "F That: A guided meditation". "

Thanks for the information. Your post at least makes the original poster's accusation clearer. However, there is still an important piece of missing information: Do you have any evidence that this Ms. Steward sent an email with a link to this youtube video? Can you provide a copy of the email? And if you don't have a copy of the email, then how did you ever learn of the email's existence and of the fact that she included a link to this youtube video?

Is it the Jason Headley video that is 2:29 minutes long with references to b++++es and also references to male anatomy parts?

Please post her email or forward it to the Pleasanton Weekly.

In a professional setting "c***sucker" can be discribed as vulgar I believe. That's was the language used in the meditation. I am sure her new district is questioning their hire.

@"Not too surprised" : "Please post her email or forward it to the Pleasanton Weekly."

I'm a bit surprised that the PW has let these unsubstantiated and unproven accusations stay up on its forums for as long as they have. All that has been posted here are some allegations by some anonymous posters who have provided absolutely no supporting evidence for their claims at all. Can you say "Libel"?

It sounds like she extended her stay for two weeks after the last mass email firebomb she sent that was in the Pleasanton Weekly October 7th Web Link so she could send out yet another outrageous email

Anyone can do a Public Records Act request to obtain and verify the emails were sent. They could also get each and every email Nicole Steward ever sent or received at her email address since she was employed at PUSD. I'm sure they would be enlightening.

@"Here's the proof"

If the email you produced is authentic, then I agree that Ms. Steward's actions were completely unprofessional and I have no problem with her being publicly ridiculed for this. The only problem is authenticating this email. If Ms. Steward sent this out as a mass email to many people, it shouldn't be difficult for the PW to convince itself that the email is authentic and publish a story on this.

That is pretty disgusting and I wonder why a little town like ours evens need a position like that.

To be fair to them. I called the Milpitas Unified Scool District office to find out if they were aware of Ms Steward actions and they were not. I forwarded to them at their request the link and her Facebook info. She may not be employed there long.

a "responsible adult" had the e-mail removed from district distribution yesterday.

Maybe she didn't write the nasty communication.

If she's a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in CA, a comlaint can be filed with the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners in Sacramento, CA or online.

If she's not a licensed MSW then the BBSE can't investigate her.

However, letters can be send to all bay area media.

Because folks lie so much, who knows what occurred...the Shadow knows!

I have a hard time believing that the email which was cut and pasted above is genuine, simply because I have a hard time believing that a person in a fairly senior position in a well-regarded school district would make such a bonehead move.

Whether it's vulgar or not depends on your point of view. Regardless it's clearly an example of bad judgement, something that I think her new employer would want to know and understand.

Does she not get the fact that if she did send this email, which was certain to be commented upon and shared, will follow her forever?

Yes, it appears that Steward's email that is shown above was cut and pasted. I'm sure the recipient of that email was nervous about sharing it and revealing themselves. There is also an email from Jim Hansen apologizing to all district employees for the "inappropriate email that was sent from a former employee". Seems to me that Hansen wouldn't stick his neck out to apologize if steward's email wasn't genuine.

If there are problems in this district it is people thinking this is some kind of serious issue.

A serious house cleaning is in order. I am glad the interim superintendent sent out a follow-up note condemning the inappropriate email. I believe the conduct of the ex-employee and others at the District office is severe and pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive.
