A “Spare the Air Alert” has been issued for today in the Bay Area, where the forecast is for unhealthy air.

Wood burning is banned both indoors and outdoors on Tuesday for the full 24 hours.

During the 24-hour period, it will be illegal for Bay Area residents to burn wood or other solid fuels in fireplaces, wood stoves and inserts, pellet stoves, outdoor fire-pits, or other wood-burning devices.

This wood-burning ban will be in effect for Pleasanton and all of Alameda County.

Winter air pollution is mainly caused by particulates or soot pollution from wood smoke. Smoke from wood-burning fires is linked to illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and lung disease, and is especially harmful for children and the elderly.

  1. Thank goodness! I can get at least one day of not inhaling the wood smoke put out by the dolt that lives behind me. With all the environmental loons in Pleasanton, it’s a mystery as to why wood burning in open fireplaces and stoves is still permitted. Wood smoke is a MAJOR source of air pollution, and wood smoke particulates are especially damaging to lungs.

  2. I have a highly efficient wood burning insert in my fire place. I burn very dense hard wood. The EPA allows 7.0 grams an hour particulate release. My insert emits 1.26 grams an hour. I could reduce that to zero with an after burner. There is no incentive for me to burn cleaner. Because the BAAQMD forbids all wood burning, no matter how clean I burn. Or, how clean I could burn.

  3. Gasping, it may be time for you to move…either into a protective bubble or a place far away from other people. Or, you could learn to live with your neighbors and get along without calling them dolts because they are as weak and frail as you.
