I am a long way removed from middle school. I remember shop classes starting in the 7th grade.
Are shop classes offered anymore in middle school or even high school these days. I am on board with this proposal, but is it a substitute for hands-on fabrication with hand and machine tools in a shop setting?
Cad/Cam systems are certainly what's happening now, and I couldn't be a bigger fan for the use of computers in manufacturing. But there is something about the smell of shellac in the morning...

Who will over see this new academy, APT? Just wondering since APT is on it's next principal removal at Hart. Good to know the union can oversee its teachers and PUSD admin as well. At least APT moves faster than PUSD HR.

Is Pleasanton Middle School offer anything like this or is thinking of it? Sounds like a great opportunity.

Creative problem solving,real-world problems...? Hart had it in him...the kids! Understanding the documentation and design process and how those areas apply to everyday use...to teach...explore options...alternatives...not taking no, for an answer. No free lunches here. Thank you Cheri Weinhagen!

The idea of this academy is good, but the name is unfortunate. Engineering is a profession, and it is not learned in middle school or high school. So, they should not be calling it an engineering academy. You don't see such things as doctor academy and lawyer academy. It would have been much better for them to call it technology academy or science and technology academy.

Engineering is an exact science...if it meets your needs. Medicine and Law are not exact sciences. Perhaps one of these young adults ( girl or boy ) attending Hart Middle School, will be that person, whose idea creates a new technology, in-turn, provides you a profession, that supports your life ( family) financial future. Sorry...not a very good anology. IMO Personally, I don't care what they call it...sigh.
