Public Records Act documents

Original post made by Gina Channell-Allen, president of the Pleasanton Weekly, on Feb 17, 2014

Editor's note: This is reposted from a thread created Monday, Feb. 17, with the headline "PW makes PUSD public records request, then keeps info from the public."

Pursuant to several Public Records Act requests made by the Pleasanton Weekly late last year, the school district has just released a large volume of documents relating to former Walnut Grove principal Jon Vranesh and the dispute between him and the district. Instead of providing those documents to us so we could carefully review, digest and responsibly report on them, it instead elected to post them on its website. We are being very cautious about allowing commenting on these documents on Town Square until we have thoroughly reviewed them and sought comment from those who may have a different view of them.

Because many of the documents are highly prejudicial and may be defamatory, we will delete comments that effectively re-publish parts of their content on our site. It is also important to note that the district declined to provide some of the documents we requested, and until we know what was not released we urge the public to be careful about drawing conclusions from what was released.

Reputations of numerous people are potentially affected by these documents, and the redactions made by the school district to protect the privacy of individuals may not adequately protect their identities. So please be restrained in your comments.

I don't see the records. Has the school board taken them down?

I don't really understand the PW's actions here. If the documents are covered under the Public Records Act, they are *public documents* and should be available, in their entirety, to all. If they are published on a public agency's web site, they are, _ipso facto_, available to all. It is neither necessary nor desirable for a newspaper to pick through the documents, redacting them in part, choosing what to publish and what to suppress. The duty of the newspaper is to report factually and intelligently on what has been disclosed, not to attempt to shape and control what the public sees.

Downtowner, With a Public Records Request, we request the documents and the provider of those documents is responsible for redacting personal information. What you see is what was disclosed to us from the school district.

It is the duty of the newspaper to report factually and intelligently on what has been disclosed. To do that, we must sift through what has been provided by the district, determine what we don't have and get comments from those on both sides of this situation.

I hope that clarifies our role in the Public Records Request.

The whole investigation is in the Pleasanton school district website under "Public Records Request". So Downtowner, they are available for everyone to read. It just appears that the Pleasanton Weekly needs time to sift through and report a story on all of the documents.

If you look at what the District posted you can see that it's a ton of material. It's also tough reading with all the holes.

Is the pleasanton weekly going to do a story on this mess?
