From Chronicle and KCBS columnist Phil Matier today: Overall, BART gets 20,473 job applications annually for an average of 177 job openings. That’s about a 1-in-100 chance of being hired. Compare that with Harvard, which accepts 6 percent of applicants. Many in the public who are looking at this latest labor spat are saying to themselves: “What up with that? I’d like that job.” Pay, benefits and longevity—guarantees provided by working for BART. Once you’re in, you’re in.

Even BART’s unions will privately admit that this is their toughest sell because the public saw what the wages that their members are earning. People are calling up BART’s Board of Directors—the elected officials that represent the Bay Area counties—and telling them: “Look, if they don’t they don’t want the jobs, I got a kid that wants them so get rid of them and hire somebody else

Bart workers shouldn't strike. I bet the union leadership is making them do it. They make too much money. I don't make as much as them. Therefore I'm against them. Only rich people should make more then me. Besides, their unionized and that means their against freedom. Because unions are against freedom. I'd rather me and my family starve than to have a union job. Because unions are bad, really bad.

It's my hope that all people involved in this transportation crisis will cross their fingers and hope for the best.

If there is indeed a STRIKE, you may see folks from all walks of life on the picket lines. PLEASE BE POLITE. This is no time to be picking on striking workers.
Employees have a legal right to strike so please do your best to accept that reality. Remember, put your best foot forward!

VIVA AMERICA! VIVA!

In case there isn't any doubt, let's be clear. BART workers are really really bad. Their overpaid, their incompenant, and they are sheep that just do whatever their leadership tells them. It's easier to go to Harvard then to get a BART job, so why are they striking? That's the question. Well, I know why. It's because their unionized, and unions are really really bad. Their corrupt because the members only want more money for their spoiled and pampered families. I haven't had a job in almost 6 years. My former bosses always said I had anger issues, but I swear it was them with their socialistic mentalities not me. If I had a job I wouldn't strike.

It's not absolutely certain that there will be a strike.

Please hold your horses.

Libertarian and Ringer (aka mittens, mike cherry, etc.) just recycled the same rants posted here when Walmart was about to open their highly successful neighborhood grocery store. Who's kidding who? Unions are going the way of the dinosaur. Good riddance.

It's somewhat disappointing to see so many middle-class folks rooting against other middle-class folks simply because they don't see anything in it for themselves. I can't help but to wonder how many of these folks also think the pay that some of the BART (and other company) managers recieve is justifiable as they root against people like themselves.
IMO Middle-class wages need to go up and BART is as good a place to start as any.

BART management and their cheerleaders are minimally concerned about "money" and clearly confused and angry re:issues of gender, race/ethnicity, and class. They exhibit an aggressive desire to bust the union.

If you believe that union members are not college educated, please submit meaningful hard numbers to prove your position. Many union employees have attended college/university. The distorted fantasies that some pro-management posters have devised to assert their positions are just that...personal distortions. They do not have access to statistically meaningful numbers and have essentially presented positions with an overlay of personal internal anger driven by fantasies related to others perceived as undesirably different.

Union employees are as responsible and capable as any other working Americans when it comes to performing their job related tasks. And, there is no reason to believe that any supporter of BART management is privy to information that proves their distorted comments as more valid than any other comments on this blog.

I ask that you read carefully what pro-management posters are asserting and ask them to prove what they often present as fact. They are entitled to present personal positions/ popular mis-understandings.

BART management knows how to play the game of LETS YOU AND THEM FIGHT!

That's why they pit BART communters against union members. It's a sadistic game intended to create rider stress/hostility and public condemnation against the union. Old game, doesn't fly. It makes the news and wins a short lived public relations silliness.

tee hee...
