City Council Election being bought by deep pockets

Original post made by Nona, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Apr 2, 2013

Candidate Miller got his signs out before any other candidate, in fact BEFORE the agreed upon date.

Several Google searches of "City Council Election Pleasanton" via Google, yield results with the first entry an ad for Miller.

When I came to this forum to point out these disconcerting facts, I was greeted with a BANNER AD on top of the page, paid for by Miller.

Is he so afraid that the voters will delve into his recent political past, helping to thwart much needed school funding by being the main signatory against the recent school parcel tax initiative?

Does he worry, that his Tea Party affiliation seems a bit distasteful, given that he can afford to own and live in one of Pleasanton's most expensive properties?

Mr. Miller will not get my vote. I want someone more in touch with me, and my neighbors in Pleasanton.

While I wouldn't vote for this Miller character under any circumstances, given his shady, unethical behavior in numerous instances with his signs, it is perfectly legal to buy Google and other ad placements, and I would staunchly defend his right to do so.

I believe Miller on the council would be nothing short of disaster for Pleasanton and that’s not just hyperbole. If you want Pleasanton to become the Bakersfield of the Bay Area, he is your man. He symbolizes everything we DON’T need in this city: partisanship, bully tactics, divisiveness, resentment, empty platitudes, and dishonest behavior. He exhibits the typical win-at-all-costs Tea Party mentality. The rules don’t apply when you are busy fighting for freedom and liberty, as if conservatives have a monopoly on those things.

The guy talks about fiscal responsibility yet wants to spend countless City dollars fighting a housing cap lawsuit that has already been settled. He thinks its ok to declare war on public school teachers because “his mom was teacher”. Oh boy! Mommy was a teacher so he must be looking out for their best interests! I’m sure teachers can really take comfort in that.

I'm with Sandra. Although the inane posts from the loons that gather here don't lock my vote, they certainly lead me to believe that Mr. Miller should be near the top of my list for consideration.

Our friend Sal/Nona "Alinsky" continues his guerilla warfare by trying to make a local election for city council a partisan battle. No facts are offered other than he lives in a large house, would make the Bay Area into Bakersfield north, and he obviously hates teachers and no doubt, children as well. The "Tea Party mentality" label is a good catch-all to to make Sal/Nona's point that Mr. Miller is a dangerous extremist.

I'm sure this is the same Sal who claims to be a fair and open-minded independent voter. Right.

I too have begun to launch some deep and really serious research on the upcoming city council election. After encountering the above posts, I realize Daniel Miller is my man. He'll rid the city of union infestation of teacher ranks, and he'll eliminate tenure within the first two years he's in office. For me, this is a no brainer.

I received an email from the Miller campaign asking for volunteers. What concerns me is that the email made a point of saying you don't have to be a resident to help. Why does he need to resort to outside folks with his campaign? Afterall, isn't it about Pleasanton?

So I looked at his endorsers on his website. It looks like at least half don't live in Pleasanton. For example what does the Mayor of San Carlos have to do with Pleasanton? Again, when is it about Pleasanton?

Here is my observation. Based on the many posts assailing ONE candidate here on PW, including the MANY pseudo 'pro' posts with comments like " He'll rid the city of union infestation of teacher ranks", I think there is a lot of WORRY and FEAR over ONE candidate in this race.

Who would have this fear? What would be the basis of this? I believe, that another candidates supporters, it would appear, FEAR that one candidate is running a strong campaign, so they are SLINGING MUD against this ONE candidate.

No candidate campaigns against, slings mud against, and defames another candidate, if the other candidate is considered WEAK. They fight against the STRONGEST opposition. It appears that there is a group here, on PW, that fears DAVID MILLER is, indeed, a very STRONG candidate. One would want to know why?

If "wow" was running for city council as a Democrat and President Obama wanted to endorse him/her, would "wow" refuse the endorsement because the President didn't live in Pleasanton?

WHY would someone sling mud AT an opponent? Maybe THEIR afraid that their precious teacher union will be broken UP! I'ts clearly TIME to restore Christian values to THE CLASSROOM and to OUR hearts, and the powers of satan and Liberalism are quaking in THEY'rE boots! WHY would ONE not want to KNOW why? FEAR!

I think the ultimate goal of David Miller is to destroy the public school system, or at the very least, cheap out on our childrens' future. Keep in mind that this guy was a big supporter of David Harmer, who said in no uncertain terms that he would like to "abolish public schools" when he wrote an article for the SF Chronicle. If the school district gives into the slash and burn demands of Miller, he’ll simply move the goal posts, say it wasn’t good enough, and demand more cuts. We’ve already seen this in action. If you’re wondering why other communities were able to pass a school parcel tax while Pleasanton failed, look no further than Miller and the Tea Party. It’s not that the school districts in other cities are so much better run (despite what nitpickers say), it’s that they don’t have a bunch of Tea Party zealots obstructing the funding of their schools.

Freddy Freedom seems to have not done ANY reseach.....says he had done some 'really serious research' and found he needed to vote for 'DANIEL miller'...Yup, REALLY SERIOUS RESEARCH ! ! ! what a joke! Just check brains at the door, and use your TP rubber stamp....the intrusive meddlers...the end of freedom, and commitment to fighting.
I'm conservative, and real conservatives do not meddle and intrude into personal lives... I'd sort of shhhh the tp label if I were you. It's going to be a loser in deeper thinking areas. I'm a very serious union fighter, like most Californians these days...don't need single issue condidates for that.

Miller recently reformatted his "Endorsement" list and removed among others, Peter Singleton from it.

Like many of Miller's endorsers, Singleton does not live in Pleasanton. He is an attorney from Menlo Park with a practice in Las Vegas.

Singleton also supported Sarah Palin in 2010. Here's an article from the Wall Street Journal by Neil King in which Singleton admits he is a "dedicated activist working on my own".

DES MOINES, Iowa—Prominent Republicans here pretty much splinter into two camps on the question of whether Sarah Palin will jump into the 2012 presidential race.

One side points to a mysterious California lawyer named Peter Singleton as proof that Sarah Palin will definitely run. The other side points to Mr. Singleton as proof she won’t.

“When it comes to Palin in Iowa, it’s pretty much Peter Singleton,” said Iowa Tea Party Director Ryan Rhodes. “The guy is everywhere.”
Neil King/ The Wall Street Journal Peter Singleton at the Iowa Capitol, where he buttonholes lawmakers between forays around the state boosting Sarah Palin.

Crisscrossing the state in a series of rented cars, the 56-year-old Mr. Singleton has spent the better part of five months visiting obscure county GOP chairmen, befriending tea-party activists, buttonholing lawmakers in the lobby of the state Capitol, and amassing a database of potential Palin supporters. His base camp is the Days Inn in West Des Moines, where he washes his shirts in the sink.

Deepening the mystery: Mr. Singleton swears he has never met Ms. Palin and has no contact with her team. “I’m just a dedicated activist working on my own,” he said.

Ms. Palin’s aides concur, insisting that she hasn’t met with Mr. Singleton and that he is in no way coordinating with her political-action committee.

But not many Republicans here buy the lone-wolf theory.

I am one that always looks at who is supporting a candidate - look for local endorsements and also the breadth and depth of endorsements. website, learned that half of Miller's endorsements are out of towners and majority of those in town are from the Tea Party special interest group. There appears to be little breadth or depth of support from Pleasanton residents.

Also do not see Miller walking his talk. He says he is against special interests, but that is primarily who is supporting him - Tea Party special interests. Nothing wrong with having support from the Tea Party, but why does he say he is against special interests (but then be OK using his own special interest group).
Miller will not be getting my vote - he does not walk his talk and does not seem to have broad local support across the City.

To Whistling in the Dark, if you are so concerned about "Christian values" in the classroom, send your kids to a private Christian school. Our public schools are supposed to encompass all children, no matter what their religion.

Council Members don't control the school district, that is why you have a school board. The Council is now controlled by the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce and candidate assassination is a regularity course of business these days. Jerry was the Chamber's "Chosen" one and Kathy Narum is the Chambers "Chosen One" in this election, hence all the garbage in this thread. Research and vote your conscience like good Americans should. Party politics should not, I believe enter city council races but that "bus" has left the station and we are now into nasty personal attacks. The Chamber has a solid core of soldiers on the Council now so relax "Kathy backers", your "horse" will win. Let the attacks on me now begin!!! Shame on you Pleasanton Weekly for allowing such nastiness to be associated with your paper, but then you are a "Kathy Backer" too.

The source of much of the character assassination and misinformation in this town is the Chamber of Commerce. The 'soldiers,' the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce, is the champion for out of town development and corporate interests that mainly live out of town.

Most of the time, candidates with the Chamber endorsement do not win. In fact, if the Chamber has endorsed Narum, that will probably cost her votes.

Since most of you seem to be bringing up the schools....
Tell me where in the constitution it says anyone is guaranteed an education or the right to an education? The problem is, government has ruined our education system and it needs an overhaul.
How is it fair that I send one kid to school, yet, my neighbor sends five kids for the same price? Why do I have to subsidize their four other kids? See, the system is flawed. Big time. So before you go spouting off that they want to 'abolish' the public school system, understand the dynamics. Understand what they are talking about. If the majority in a city did not want their property taxes raised to fund the schools, how can you blame 1 guy. This city consistently votes left, so your logic or point does not make sense. But of course, the left blames the TP for everything.

If the Chamber endorses Kathy, it will prove I need to vote for someone else. I agree with Scott Walsh above. Scott R, Otis and others enjoy the chance to control our elected officials and it has to stop.

Heads up Kathy and grow a backbone. If they pick you - tell them NO THANKS. Are you truly an independent thinker or a puppet for the Chamber?

Kathy Narum has on her endorsement list Peter Macdonald, former member of the good ol boys club and now a private attorney representing deep-pocketed interests before the city. BRE, builder of a forthcoming 500 unit apartment complex near Pleasanton BART, will expect votes in return for support and endorsements. Do Pleasantonians really want this type of representation, pay-for-play and back room dealing, or do they want an independent voice on the council?

"wow" said "What concerns me is that the email made a point of saying you don't have to be a resident to help. " Not sure why that bothers you. Where you complaining when Kook-Callio had all of her students from Fremont "volunteering" for her. At the same time giving them extra-credit in her class for "volunteering" for her?

I agree with the above posters that the chamber of commerce PAC's purpose is to stack the council with those who will support all of the additional housing they want in Pleasanton. The only time the chamber comes to city council meetings is to lobby for new housing. The Chamber PAC is independent of the chamber of commerce and is controlled by developers and developer-interests. They could care less about business.

For me, being endorsed by a public employee union or the chamber PAC is enough to let me know that I would not want to vote for that person.

Next on the list, find the connections. Kathy Narum is endorsed by Janice Sangster-Phalen, commercial real estate sales and Pleasanton Chamber 2013 Economic Vitality Committee Chair. Friend of Peter MacDonald. Look at social media, look at 'likes' on Narums campaign page, you can easily see Narum's deep-pocketed supporters.

The Chamber and City Hall groomed, hand-picked candidate, Kathy Narum. If you want a voice on the council, it isn't Narum, vote for an independent voice.

The current Council has plenty of "local civic experience". That's the problem.............

So now we have a comment, from a self-described Narum supporter, and avowed TP hater. Kinda confirms what is said above. The Narum supporters are just a little bit worried. His history is a mystery, isn't that a telling comment? Translated, we cannot find anything on him, so we will just keep on SLINGING MUD.

And that answers the want to know why part too. We don't have the goods on Miller. We can only, therefore SLING MUD.

Impressive! Looks great in an ad. Just a little to vague for me. On-the-job training in the last few years, is proving disasterous.
Oh, we have political OUTSIDERS 'ON' him and that is quite enough.
OUTSIDE TP money REelected Harry Reid, thus making him , again, Senate Leader. TPers do NOT understand to skills required for winning....only, charge the field, and attack! Ultimately, making things worse than before. . . but still believe they 'know-it-all.

I was illusstrating, TPers are clueless about the 'political PROCESS". Surely, you are aware of the OUTSIDER money (from Palin & others), meddling in a NEV race, with TPs usual scheme of running against VERY ELECTABLE REPUBLICANS in primaries, then LOSING what's important, the NOV GENERAL elections, over and over. So in all their brilliance elected incompetent Sharon Angle in the primary, when Harry Reid was FINALLY LOSING NEV to Angle's opponent...But petulent, childish TPers would rather stupidly set up easy Dem victory, than elect a Repub who wasn't one their own extremists. So Dems LOVE them for their blundering.

BTW, IF you had done appropriate research and vetting, you would KNOW KATHY IS a fiscal conservative ! ! ! The time is now and Kathy will serve Pleasanton in a fiscally responisble manner.

I didn't mention one single candidate. I'm actually thankful there are several that are running and willing to put up with the lame personal attacks, and that includes David Miller. Why don't you just promote Kathy? And why don't you tell people why she's the best candidate? Tearing other people down to promote your own personal agenda strikes me as bad/weak argument/strategy.

People attack character, insult with words and name call when they don't want to debate the issues. It takes no critical thinking to participate or be influenced by such tactics . These kind of school yard tactics are only successful influencing that population of voters who are least informed. Like many, when I see it, those tactics speak volumes about that candidate and the kind of support he/she attracts.

It's important for Miller to get a lot of outside money because, well, you see, what the city council does has significant reverberations for the rest of the nation. Harry Reid? Not so much. What impact can a senator from Nevada have on anyone outside of Nevada? But if Miller stands up, foams a little bit at the mouth, and spits a little bit of spittle at his colleagues, it'll have major consequences for people in Maine and Florida. Yeah, I GET it!

As a voter i understand the 4 candidates want to provide a high quality of life for our City. of course they do. but can anyone tell me where ANY of the candidates stand on:
*El Charro road on East Pleasanton and how it going to be paid for? Est. of $70-100 million!
* How much housing should go into the East Side?
* What are your ideas to work with PUSD to keep our schools great?
* what is Pleasanton doing to ensure my kids are safe at school?
* did you back PP or QQ and why?
* comment on Pleasanton's Inclusionary Housing of 15% required by developers, even though the Palmer case made that illegal
* is a road a structure?
* crime appears to be rising. What are you going to do about it, if elected?
* what do you propose should be done to address pension reform, that has NOT already been done?
* Pleasanton's downtown region is under review to add stricter guidelines for residential housing. Do you support this?

I could go on and on, but the question is, does anyone know where candidates stand on these important issues?
