About those "Green" Job's Ms. Boxer

Original post made by 5 Year Resident, Pheasant Ridge, on Nov 5, 2010

There is a growing scandal in Fremont. The main stream press just started covering it, funny, they started covering it only days after the election...what courage.

The main stream press is now calling it "the controversal" solar products company Solyndra, again, funny, they didn't call Solyndra "controversal" when President Obama made a speech about his stimulus program from the Solyndra factory floor earlier this year. The Obama administration gave Solyndra $535M in loan guarantees falling victim to Solyndra's slick marketing and product hype, instead of at least doing some basic background work when Solyndra's competitors claimed that Solyndra would crash and burn, instead they opened the tax payer coffiers to Solyndra in an effort to get the Presidents approval ratings up. Not to mention the $1B that private investers poured in, probably much of it CA Government pension money. Solyndra told Obama that they would create 1,000 new, good paying "green" jobs this year. Big surprise, it's not going to happen, in fact Solyndra is closing its newest manufacturing site in Fremont, consolidating in one building...and laying off hundreds of their employees. Why? It's really quite simple, the Chinese are producing better panels much cheaper. So Ms. Boxer, when you said, you wanted to create jobs here in CA...not China like Ms. Whitman. You make the same mistake many politicos in CA make...you, the Government do not create jobs, the private sector does and the market drives where those jobs go, not a power hungry Senator, I hate to break it to you...but you don't have that kind of power, even though, in your own mind you really think you do.

I am hoping California recovers, I really do. But being close to the renewable energy, or "green" jobs initatives, I can tell you the same thing that many of the top Cal State top engineers privately tell me. That yes, we can make an electric car that goes 30mph for an hour, and yes, we can make a tire out of enzymes, even jet fuel from algae...but WE CAN NOT do it economically and we CAN NOT do it in a commercial way that creates the "thousands" of new green jobs the liberals have been promising us. This is the "wolf ticket" we have been sold from the liberal CA politicans. There may be a "green" industry in the future, a robust and succesful one, but we need jobs in CA NOW!...and this is light years away. And developing a "green" idea into a practical product and bringing it to a waiting and eagar market will be done by the private sector, not the Government, so please stop wasting our money!

So everytime you pass that big empty building off I880 South, you can thank Mr. Obama and Ms Boxer for spending $535M of your hard earned dollars for a huge white elephant!

5 Year Resident - Be accurate, and maybe your opinions will carry more weight.
Solyndra is closing the older Fab 1. See (Web Link and (Web Link and (Web Link Consolidating into the newer Fab 2. And laying off less than 200.
Not good news, but certainly not the situation you describe.

Dark Corners...I stand by the accuracy of my post. You failed to address the context which is less about Solyndra, who pulled back their IPO and is doomed to fail and more about the lie we in CA have been feed about "thousands of green jobs" my question to you is when? What happened to the 1,000 jobs our $535M we gave to Solyndra was supposed to create? Yes, Dark Corners, it really is that bad. That's $535,000 a job...and their laying off hundreds? And you say it's not that bad there? Why did Obama and Boxer use a failing comapny to defend their "green" job stimulus?

Why did we hear about their troubles only after the election? Why did Solyndra pull back their IPO? How much of Solyndra's "private" funding was from the CA Government pension funds? The below was published yesterday by Intersolar News:

"If the company couldn't hold out until November 2, some believed it could be an embarrassment for the Obama Adminstration, which has given the company $535 million in loan guarantees. (Private investors have plunked in over $1 billion.) The setback, combined with the prevailing mood in the country, could have tipped votes against clean energy, some feared. An immense, idle factory with a "Brought to you by the ARRA" seal of approval doesn't make for great advertising.

The money would have been better used to expand the freeway near Fremont, one competitor noted.

Solydra held out, barely. The company fed the information of its woes to the New York Times under what was likely an embargo until late on election night. The company then began sending out notices to other news outlets after the Times ran its piece.

In a nutshell, Solyndra will shut its first factory and scale back its production goal from 610 megawatts in 2013 to 300 megawatts in 2013. Declining prices in solar panels -- spurred by cheaper silicon, cheaper products from competing Chinese manufacturers, and other factors -- were cited as the culprits."

Thank you 5 yr resident! I saw the headline in yesterday's Times, wanted to start a thread here, but didn't have time. Headline "Solar firm 'facing the heat'", with byline "Highly touted Solyndra won't expand Fremont site, eliminating company's plans to hire 1,000 workers ".
While allowing our small manufacturing support 'exisiting' middle-class engineer-type jobs dissappear, Obama gave solyndara OUR big bucks twice, and came hear 3 times during the campaign! Dems like Obama, Boxer, and others used Solyndra like the West-coast DNC (DemNatCom) headquarters !..for theatre!..while trying to make those of us LOSING EXISTING jobs that the 1/2 Bill $$ he dropped there in May was about jobs !
But, the part that made me doubly ANGRY that on that 5/22/10 vist, it was followed JUNE 18 with the article announcing Solyndra WITHDRAWAL of it's public offering ! ! ! I wanted to scream from the mountaintops that those several 'green elites' at the top AND Obama had to have KNOWN that days earlier ! Not only did Obama go ahead with the 'theatrical publicity' for the dem green campaign of lies, but that the 1/2 Bill$$ should have gone to SAVE real jobs, and to struggling VIABLE business' and people put on the street I felt duped by all involved, plus the dihonest placement of my money...double-sting ! Had I screamed about the POLITICS and the dishonesty, some would discharge as campaign opposition, but facts are facts ! !It was a combination of green propaganda, campaign lies, and squandering our borrowed US $$$. Sickening. Go to www.contracostatimes for 'the rest of the story'. THIS crap is why the national results are what they are. (but CA is forever hopeless because of the gullible).

"When I was a child, I thought like a child ". .
How long is this fantasy of lies going to continue, and then stupid Californians vote to charge ahead now, squandering more and more dollars on childish dreams and failed experiments.
OUR US economic clock is ticking as is the experiment vs reality clock ticking. We need more new nuclear plants now ! WHILE we continue ALL other sources OR else stop the pretense about 'foreign dependence'. A single uranium pellet the size of MY fingernail, provides equal energy as 149 gal of oil or 1 Ton of coal, or 17,000 cubic feet of natual gas....but feeds into our EXISTING power lines...no need to build ugly, costly transmission TOWERS across our states, which will have to be built from distant solar fields ! Wake up.

Someone is laughing all the way to the bank and it's not us taxpayers. I wouldn't be surprised if Solyndra takes that money and opens up a plant in China to manufacture those panels. Where's Obama now?

Really sad. We are loosing so many well paying jobs while people like Boxer and Nancy play politics.I feel people from both sides of the political divide are to be blamed.I do not think the Republicans will be able to wave a magic wand to stop this out flow of technical and well playing jobs. They have no solutions but keep saying cut taxes cut taxes cut taxes when we have trillions of dollars in debt. Our economy cannot improve unless that happens. We can not be strong if the only jobs we have are in McDonald or Starbucks or Walmart.

Ajay, that was my point. The double-sting. That money could have been to save my engineering son's job, whose manufactuting employer company went 200, to 100, then since Jan 1, from 80 to zero. Kids ready for college, but middle-age Dad unemployed since July !. It never occurred to Obama, Pelosi, Boxer, or McNerney to SAVE those long-standing, Northern CA companies ! ! Instead,go again, and again to Solyndra to bestow 1/2 BIL $$ on those couple top execs to laugh all the way to their bank. WHO, WHO among our electeds were protecting OUR JOBS !! NOT ONE OF THEM ! ! ! We were truly double-crossed. that point cannot be made enough. Main street was dying while that was happening...the voters knew it, even if those elected didn't know enough, or care enough to save Main Street. It was all about '08 promised campaign payback to greens...just let them PLAY with our money ! This will go down in the books as "believe it or not" while Rome burns ! Green jobs still arent't 3%, so if they double? yippie, it will be 6% . So with green & public unions splitting 50/50...there ain't nothin' left for fixin' Main Street !! The above named better get their thinkin' hats, we're out of time, money, and patience ! !
