Dog droppings. Enough is enough.

Original post made by Devon, Apperson Ridge, on Oct 4, 2010

I was having lunch at a local park today, watching dogs come in and out of the park to use the well-manicured lawn as their toilet. The owners were responsible and did pickup after their dogs.

Next came a mother with 3 toddlers. The children rolled around on the grass, soaking up all the leftover droppings from the beautiful lawn. I am pretty sure one of them rolled over the same spot where a Mastiff left its dinner from last night. I can't help but think how disgusting that is, not to mention the health effects on the young ones. These children are exposed to E-coli, Salmonella, and other parasites from dog droppings. Something should be done to keep these children safe at the park. We need dog owners to stop using our parks as their pets' toilet.

P.S. And don't use my front lawn either! The urine leaves a distinct yellow spot on my lawn by killing the grass. Have some consideration for your neighbors.

Here's a thought: what if kind, thoughtful people told these families, "hey, you might not want to roll around and lick that dirt--a dog just pooped there."? Would that help?

Watch the children run barefoot around the trees in the park after they've just been doused with their regular application of glyphosate, nothing like wet herbicide on baby skin.

Living here for so many years I would have thought that nothing would surprise me. Until the dogie revolution that has been upon us for the past few years.
People take them into restaurants, grocery stores, medical offices, there is no limit to where Pleasanton people think that their dogs belong. It has just gotten worse with that dog store downtown. They encourage people to bring their dogs with them everywhere. I think that a shotgun with salt pellets would be an appropriate way to combat the people who walk their dogs on my street and let them poop on the lawns. The gun would be for the owners, the dogs are just doing what they do naturally.

lifetime resident-this is not just a Pleasanton phenomenon. If you get out of the city limits, you'll see this attitude is pervasive throughout the liberal Bay Area. It's amazing that sdo much attention is paid to plastic bags, smoking and Happy Meals, but no one is willing to take full responsibility for their animals.

I think this is ridiculous. There are all kinds of animals that poop in the park- squirrels, raccoons, birds, rats, mice, etc.... We don't live in a sterile world. You can pick up viruses and bacteria anywhere- the grocery store carts, elevator buttons at the doctors office. I don't think people should be able to bring their dogs everywhere, but I think some people need to find something else to think about- find a hobby or something. At first when I started to read this post, I thought someone wasn't picking up after their dog or something, but they were, so calm down.

Dog poop...SERIOUSLY? Note to PW editorial staff, create a new section for the paper strictly for whining, bitching, ranting and all things that "really tick me off."

If it' not a cell phone tower, ice skating rink, event @ the fairgrounds, statues downtown, or God forbid...homes on a hillside that nobody can see it's gonna be lamented in these pages.

Can't we all just get along P-Town?

Is that all you dog haters have to complain about...dogs and their poop and their existence in downtown? What about the drunk drivers in town, or the car break ins that are reported in the weekly? Really????

Or as T.R. Ollman stated....why not tell the mother of the children rolling around the grass that there was a recent visit by a dog in that spot?

You need a hobby!!!

The point of the post was to comment on the irresponsible dog owners that are around. Some are responsible and do pick up after their pets at public parks. However, there are a select number of owners that allow their pets to poop and not clean up after them. The city should have doggy doo bags at EVERY park not just a select few. This will encourage owners to clean up. Sometimes dogs poop more than once and the owner only brought one bag and is forced to leave the second dose. City Of Pleasanton, please provide doggy doo bags at every park. Owners, please be responsible for your pets. I love dogs, just don't like stepping in it!

Shannon- if you read above- the point of this post was that this person doesn't think someone should let their dog poop in the park even if the person picks up after them. I agree, it is gross to leave your dog's waste behind and it would be great if every park had poop scoop bags available- I have been caught by the double poop walk and ended up digging in a close-by garbage can to find something to pick it up, but I am sure not everyone is willing to do that. It would make sense if someone was saying, please don't leave your dog's poop behind, but if you read the original post that is not what it says. And I don't think anyone likes stepping in poop.

As a non dog owner it is fastinating to watch how the dogs have trained their masters. I mean think about it for a moment, the dog gets taken for a walk and they have a human walking after them picking up there waste. Very comical to watch.

The point is that dog owners should not use our public parks and their neighbors' lawn as their dogs' toilet, period. Let your dog relieve itself before taking it out on a walk. No, I don't hate dogs. I hate dog owners who show no consideration for their neighbors and others who use the public parks.

@ Devon. Seriously? Make your dog go to the bathroom before you take him for a walk? Are people who live in apartments supposed to train them to use the toilet?

I am a dog owner and always pick up after him. The worst offenders are people whose dogs poop on the sidewalk and they leave it to be stepped on.

To "lifetime resident": While I agree with you that there seems to be a feeling of freedom in the bay area for people to bring their dogs to public places, I take issue with your statement that the downtown dog store 'encourages people to take their dogs everywhere'. The store does welcome pet owners to bring their dogs into the store to shop, have a treat, or a drink of water, but it is not store policy to tell patrons to take their dogs to other public places. They do promote responsible pet ownership which includes complying with local licensing and pet ordinances. They will even provide you with a papertowel or baggie to clean up urine or poop if you need it.
How about those pet owners walking their their dogs at the Farmers Market right in front of the signs that say NO PETS ALLOWED??

@ Pleasantonian: Seriously? Do you mean dogs can't be trained to do their biz on newspapers, training paper, or other means? Wow!

Have you ever seen what dog's urine can do to the lawn? I spend thousands of dollars maintaining my yard each year only to find large patches of dead grass around my lawn caused by dog's urine. Not cool!

Animals do their business outside. People do it inside. However, animal owners need to pick up after their pets when they poop on the sidewalk (do you step over it? please!), or anywhere that's not their property.

Like someone else mentioned, there are lots of animals using our parks and yards for toilets. Give your kids a daily bath and chill out a bit.

Otherwise your kids will show signs of your pampering and will never leave the video games to live on their own.

Spending thousands of dollars on your yard that you know is going to be destroyed seems a little odd.

Let's ban dogs! How about we ban all animals, unless of course our mayor has one. We should also ban babies from parks, because there is a risk that their diaper could leak. And why stop at parks, we should ban babies from Pleasanton along with dogs and cat and squirrels. I don't really like spiders because they make people scream which disturbs my quality of life, so we should get rid of all those too. Mosquitoes carry all kinds of disease. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so if we get rid of all the water in Pleasanton, we shall all be much safer. Let's not forget about all those annoying birds that wake me up in the morning - ban them I say!

Thousands of dollars maintaining your lawn? Is that rational? There are native ground covers which require minimal maintenance. The noise, water and air pollution that is created by maintaining lawns is absurd.

So, you don't like dogs at the dog park? I don't take mine there because the big dogs rule the dog park area and often the lawn in front of it. Also, the fence is too low in the small dog park for a fast dog that can jump high.

My gripe is all the parents causing extra traffic on Muirwood Drive in front of Muirwood Park. It was never this bad before. There are lots of cars parked very tightly, lining the streets everytime there is a children's sports practice or game (which this time of year seems like every evening and every weekend). It's a traffic nightmare when everyone is manuevering around. Some of these drivers are too lazy to drive down a street and choose to make dangerous turns and practically cause accidents. We the neighbors are sick of it. We didn't buy homes here expecting so much traffic flowing onto our streets.

Other people should be able to park for the playground, picnic area, and dog park, but now they have to park a block away. Why doesn't the city require that these large groups practice and play only at parks and schools that have adequate off-street parking? The city should encourage ride-sharing/carpooling to these events!

The comment that the dog store encourages irresponsible dog-owner behavior is bordering on the hysterical. They do nothing but encourage RESPONSIBLE behavior... to even indicate that they have that kind of power over the dog lovers of Pleasanton is hilarious!

There was a string some time ago, person asked that dogs do not pee or poop on their grass. To use the public facilities, no problem, doing that and now this? If Pleasanton bans dogs from going out in public places, then I would like them also to ban screaming obnoxious kids from those areas.

Stop your whining and get a life!

Dog owners, 90% of the comments above sound like they are from dog owners....get over your selves. Who ever heard of dog owner entitlement. Those of us who have chosen not to have dogs don't care about or even like your dogs. They poop and pee on my lawn and owners thing it's ok to just leave it there. I get to deal with picking it up and trying to get the lawn to regrow because your dog's pee has made a huge dead spot on my lawn. Gee am I old fashioned? How about some etiquette that goes along with the responsibility of owning a dog that you insist on taking out in public? Most important thing to remember, you might love your dog to death, I could care less about it.

Dogless - I'm guessing that most of those who chose to have a dog don't care about or even like you.

I'm guessing you are not old-fashioned as old-fashioned America dogs were running essentially free (no leash laws) and almost everyone outside of the big cities had many animals both.

So it seems like you are neither old-fashioned or new-fashioned just another grumpy, whiny resident. You are probably the person i drive behind who doesn't seem to understand that there is a lane to turn into going from Owens to hacienda or other basic roadway considerations.

Seriously? Now we don't want dogs pooping on the same lawns that other wild animals (& domestic cats) poop on? Did it ever occur to you self centered people that the parks are for dog owners too? They aren't just for kids. Besides, you think *children* don't leave germs on the grass? Kids throw up too Devon.

What makes me angry is CATS! There are no leash laws for them. I leash my dogs and clean up after them, but it's okay for cats to leave muddy paws on my freshly washed car and to poop on my grass so that my family has to be careful on our own front lawn (even though our dogs use the back lawn & not the front).

I can't believe we are at the point where even leashed dogs with responsible owners are receiving complaints! I agree that dogs (& CATS) should not use other people's private property as their toilet. But these are PUBLIC parks. Want to keep your kids away from germs? Don't bring them to the park! And, it isn't just dog poop you have to worry about.

There has been a "relaxation" of people's ideas of where it is OK to take their dogs. In stores, medical offices, restaurants etc. is NOT OK in my book. I will not eat in a restaurant that allows dogs. As to dogs in the parks, that is expected.

And those residents that seem to want to take their dogs in my house, the answer is NO!! I don't want the hair, fleas, smell and occasional accidents that happen. Dog owners, please respect my right to NOT have your pets in my home!! Or the grocery stores, or the medical offices etc.

Ever think it might be cruel keeping a big dog in the house or in a small backyard? If you do not have enough space for a dog to be a dog then do not get one. I also agree with dogless that if you love your dog then take care of it and pick up after it because those of us who do not have dogs do not like yours.

I'm not saying it isn't important, but just a characteristic of some Pleasantonian (me included). As a dog owner, I have always tried to get my dog to do his business in the backyard before going for a walk....However, for those of you who don't have dogs, peeing is a way of marking territory, and letting other dogs know who's around. I have always had a very difficult time, preventing my dog from peeing around every bush, lightpole and tree between my house and the park and back. If you have a solution, please market it - I'm sure you will make millions of dollars on that.

IT NEEDS TO BE LAW THAT NO DOGS SHOULD BE ALLOWED IN ANY SPORTS DEDICATED PARKS, IM PRETTY SURE YOU WOULD BE STOPPED IF YOU WERE PLAYING SPORTS IN A DEDICATED DOG PARK. NO ANIMALS AT SPORTS PARK ON HOPYARD, VAL-VISTA SOCCER PARK, THE NEW ( ALREADY COVERED IN DOG CRAP) BERNAL BASEBALL FIELDS, UPPER BERNAL SOFTBALL/SOCCER FIELDS, AND I KNOW IM MISSING A FEW OTHERS. THERE ARE PLENTY OF PUBLIC ( FOR ANY USE) PARKS IN TOWN. ALSO THERE ARE DOG ONLY PARKS. WHATS WRONG WITH SPORTS ONLY PARKS. PLEASANTON CITY COUNCIL NEEDS TO WAKE UP, IF WE ARE GOING TO BE A CITY WHICH PRIDES ITSELF ON OUR SPORTS PROGRAMS/COMPLEXS, LETS NOT TREAT THEM LIKE DOG CRAP. I CHALLENGE ANY CITY OFFICAL, FROM THE MAYOR TO PARKS AND REC. TO GO TAKE A VERY GOOD LOOK AT HOW THE DOG WASTE PROBLEM IS DISTROYING OUR BELOVED SPORTS FIELS/COMPLEXES. ITS NOT AN UNREASONABLE THING TO HAVE SPORTS PARKS AS OFF LIMITS TO DOGS. THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM AVAILABLE IN THIS TOWN FOR MORE DOG ONLY PARKS. GET THE DOGS OUT OF ALL SPORTS DEDICATED PARKS IN TOWN AND DO IT NOW BEFORE ITS TO LATE. THE DOG PROBLEM IS ALREADY DISTROYING OUR SPORTS PARKS. THE ORIG. POST WAS RIGHT IN EVERYTHING THEY SAID, FOR YOU SEE THE LAW IS CLEAR YOU MUST CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG, NOT JUST TO THE PIONT OF GRABBING A HANDFUL AND BE DONE WITH IT. THE LAW SAYS YOU MUST CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG, ALL OF IT, SO AS TO LEAVE IT IN A NATURAL READY FOR USE CONDITION. COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN TO THE CHIEF OF POLICE ALL THE WAY TO THE MAYOR, REPEATEDLY UNTIL THEY UPHOLD THE LAW ALREADY IN PLACE.

Lee - a few comments

"I will not eat in a restaurant that allows dogs."

Good for you, this is how a free market should operate. We should not have to make new laws every time someone is annoyed. If a restaurant lets in dogs it has to be aware that it may alienate some customers, but it may gain others. It a perfectly valid business decision.

"Dog owners, please respect my right to NOT have your pets in my home!!"

This just confuses me. Everyone that comes to my house I have invited in. If they have something that I do not want it the house they do not bring it in the house (whether its a dog, sick kid, giant snake, or fruitcake). Do you honestly have troubles with random people bringing pets into your home?

It wasn't until the person made the post on the board suggesting to poison the animals. No, no one mentioned *poison*. It was a reference to tempting dogs with chocolate which is toxic or *poisonous* to them (so in essence, a reference to poisoning dogs). I think we comprehended the meaning just fine.

Public parks are just that....public! People without children have to tolerate kids in them; people without dogs have to tolerate dogs in them. That's life. And I don't get the paranoia about e coli. I would wash off the pacifier if it fell onto ANY public ground; heck if it fell onto MY grass. God knows that cats, rats, racoons, birds, etc. poop there the same as my own dogs.

I clean up after my dogs and feel it is my right to walk them at the park. I don't let my dogs on anyone's grass or property. I agree that *private* property is no place for my dogs unless invited. Honestly, I hate it when people let their pets off leash and they pee on my grass.

I can't believe so many of you compare dogs with children (human), as if the two are equal. Dogs are dogs. They are no different than a rat, raccoon, chicken, or a bird. They are replaceable and do not have the same rights as we human do. They are not protected by our Constitution nor do they have any legal rights. In various parts of the world, they are dinner. So don't even try to compare dogs with human.

With that said, I am not blaming the dogs for ruining our parks and my yard with their waste. Their inconsiderate owners are the blame. Yes, you know who you are. You allow your dogs to pee all over my lawn leaving many brown spots. You also allow you dogs to poop all over the grass where our children play. Take your dog to the dog park so it can enjoy the company of other dogs.

We have a big dog that needs exercise. She is an outdoor dog for the most part and has a yard to run around in. That alone is not enough so we take her on walks. No we do not take her downtown, we do not let her pee in the parks (as we walk around them), no we do not take her to parades or sporting events and no we do not take her to restaurants. We do however let her go on her walk. We pick up after her but aside from putting a diaper on her, we let go on bushes and in some cases lawns. Dogs are not meant to hold it in as they instictively mark spots as they walk. This is natural and is something they have done for thousands of years. Does this make us bad pet owners? I don't think so.

To Liberal Loser,

I'd be happy to walk my dog in a dog park....however, my "neighbors" in their wonderful NIMBY way, refused to allow part of Neilson park to have a dog park in it. There is no dog park on the east side of Pleasanton. Neither is the "big green bowl" at Neilson park specified as a "sports area", though soccer and baseball practice there all the time. I walk my dog on the side walk across Neilson park and down the Stoneridge path, as I also had little kids who I took to play at Neilson park. I agree with those who are outraged about dog and cat poop and pee in their yards. I do NOT allow my dog to do his "business" in neighbors' yard. The majority of dog owners are very responsible for picking up after their pets. Not much they can do about the pee in the park. Like another poster said, short of diapers..............

As both a new dogowner and a long-time Pleasanton property owner (ie,taxpayer), I find this thread very intriguing. To clarify this issue, the underlying problem is that the dog owners, even though they were considerate enough to pick up after their dogs, had allowed their dogs to relieve themselves in an area that is walked on/played on by others, especially children. To avoid this conflict and a potential public health hazard, dog owners should not allow their pets to pee or poop on the lawn area or on the plants of our public parks (as well as on your neighbor's property). Going potty on the lawn and on plants not only causes a health concern, but patching up damaged grass and replacing dead plants also costs the city more to maintain our pristine parks. Dog owners should, and can, train their 4-legged friends to confine their potty place to the unimproved dirt areas that are commonly located along the perimeter of the parks. And of course, please pick up the mess.

WOW! I read the PW for pure entertainment and this site never lets me down. People get a life! Stop complaining on some cyber site and do something about it. Protest, hug a tree, cry to your socialist president. Anything but this. My gosh do you not have jobs, friends, a satisfying sex life? Why must you get so angry over dog poop? I agree its annoying and I too, have a neighbor who lets their little ugly rat dog roam free and crap on my lawn from time to time but I don't have a coronary over it. Its just par for the course I guess. My dogs, they do their business before we leave the house but unfortunately dogs cannot be "trained" as some would suggest to not go if they have to wherever that may be. Come on people, their dogs, not humans. However your kids can be trained to wash their hands and bodies after playtime. "Hello Fluffy- before we leave for our walk today you need to practice your kegal exercises so that you can hold in your urine so that Mr. Panniesinabunch doesn't have a coronary over the fact that you peed on his bush. Also, if you have to poo, remember to hold it in or find a few accorns from the park and stick it where the sun don't shine to plug it until you get home. Can you do this for me Fluffy?" LOL

They are just dumb animals with no soul, values, morals, long term ambitions, like rats, birds, and liberals.

I enjoy taking my dogs to a dog park. However, there is a regular park walking distance from my house. To get to a dog park I need to drive to it. Sorry, we'll be using *our* local park where both my kids and dogs have played.

Devon, I don't get why you obsess about dog poop where kids play. I agree 100% that we should clean up after our pets, but that grass is not sanitary...even if dogs are not allowed on it.

I don't consider dogs and humans as the same. I happen to have both kids and dogs. My point was that people tend to get too centered on what applies to THEM without considering the differing needs/desires of others (other taxpayers no less). The parks are not just for "kids". And AGAIN...don't eat off the grass...you will likely be ingesting cat, bird and raccoon germs.

The idea of a weed-free, ultra-trim, super-green lawn is essentially a product of the 50s and 60s in the United States. As American industry became more efficient in turning out innovations people needed, there was plenty of capacity left over to turn out even more products that were less essential—such as those that could be used to create and maintain perfect lawns.
Because most grass used to seed lawns is non-native, many products are needed to maintain lawns. To get the perfect lawn people continually go back to the store to get chemicals. It's a self-fulfilling failure, they have to return to the store over and over again.
It's 2010. You don't have to show us how perfect you are with your perfect lawn. You can actually spend time and money on something that matters.

Dogless,

Why would someone bringing a pet to your house be a problem at all? It is your house, your rules. I make the same rules at my place. I've had a couple people show up at my door with their dog in a leash, and before they entered I made it very clear that the dog would have to stay in the car (I don't want them in my backyard either).

Bringing an animal to someone's home without knowing if the person allows animals in their property first equals to someone coming over and lighting a cigarette without asking first.

But wait! Some dogs are like humans. They sleep in bed with their owners, eat at the table, lick their owner's faces after they licked their behind, all that good stuff.

To each their own. I have no problem with dogs in parks if people pick up after them. Just don't bring them to my house. Again, my rules.

Dog owners should have their dogs defecate on their own property, it's as simple as that. Apartment dwellers should have their dogs defecate in an area where there is minimal human foot traffic. Unfortunately, dog owners let the dogs choose where they would like to defecate, which is rude and disgusting. And dogs in restaurants and stores is beyond ridiculous. Love my doggies but they don't come shopping with me.
