Maybe you should confirm that there are, in fact, cameras in the restrooms before getting "warped".

The only cameras in the bathrooms are the ones attached to your child's cell phone. Try verifying your facts before you spout out wrong information.

Hey Pleasanton Weekly, how about showing just a little more management here, and keep threads like this off the website - at least until there's a shred of validation?
This isn't the same as yelling FIRE in a theater, but it has that same smell to it.

Don,
Remember you are asking a group of journalists to censor free speech. That won't happen. If the story is true or not is not up to them to decide. They are only concerned with language and offensive comments.
Mom of 5,
Come on! Do you really think the schools would put a camera in the bathroom? That is illegal. They just would not do that. Is your kid a freshman somewhere? Sounds like something an upper classmen would try to convince them of. Or a silly middle or elementary school rumor. And you got caught up in it. Shame on you. Did you ask the Principal first?

I don't believe the camera thing either, but I think that the schools should install very loud SMOKE detectors. I bet that would stop the smokeing in the bathrooms.

Scott,
I suggest you look up what free speach protects, (I'll give you a hint, public forums run by a company are not covered). If the Pleasanton Weekly decided to remove or censor the post, they can.

The cameras should be in the classrooms to record teachers who waste time talking about personal issues, spend class time on their cell phone, are chronically late and behave inappropriately.

Jamie, even better would be having cameras on parents 24/7. Many of the parents in our community aren't credentialed, licensed, or have even the most basic parent training. You think the occasional teacher acts inappropriately? You should see what these parents get up to!

Scott: Journalists are supposed to verify stories before they print them. I don't know where you got the idea that journalists can print anything and it's up to someone else to verify the story. That is the problem we have withh the bloggers. No one checks their information, they just crank it out.

The bathrooms are not just places that kids smoke in. There is vandalism, graffitti, and bullying going on in there. I guess the school should just accept that and keeping paying to fix these things.

this is info a principal told a student at one of the high schools as a joke..................... from what i heard amongst the kids.... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, funny how all of you get so outraged.......... everyone has the right to ask, to comment and apparently insult a concerned mother, maybe she didnt want to ask the principal? maybe she didnt want to get shunned or insulted like all of you are doing here, shameful at best....... all of you. you have time to insult, and be defensive for a school issue you did nothing to find out about.............. at least mother of 5 was concerned and was reaching out to a public she thought she could trust... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... warped community.

There should be cameras all over the school, especially in the class rooms, since I am paying for the education of these youngsters I want to know what is going on.

There should be cameras everywhere! Mega pixel, day/night vision, IP based security cameras are our ONLY safeguard against vandalism, acts of violence & make for a physical deterrent against all sorts of nasty goings on. Besides as an after-the-fact measure to be able to review crimes that have been committed to make ID's on the perpetrators the cameras make for a nice C.Y.A. element for the school & district.

Ok, so my comments on having journalists censor the blog was merely a point that this is a free forum and they (PW) would not censor anything that was not slanderous or out right vulgar. They do not have the want or time to verify every story someone posts here. Come on Pleasanton Parent, I did not really think that blogging was written in the constitution for protection. Moron.
And one last thing to all you hypocrites who want everything at the school on video. What were all you doing in the school bathroom? Don't lie because you want to look good on the PW forum.

I think this is great idea. The district is low on cash. What better way to make money than the webcam business?

I doubt that it would be lawful to install cameras in any bathroom, so I am not going to worry about that. But......I heard a story not long ago from a Amador High School student, that there was sexual activity going on in an elevator. I no longer have kids at Amador and we didn't have any elevators when my kids attended there. If this is a fact then possibly that is where there needs to be more supervision.

Of course there aren't cameras in the bathrooms. Geez! I'm sorry, but that's just a silly question to even ask. I agree with one of the people above who says that the mom got caught up in the rumor-mill. Don't you remember when you were in junior high or high school, how little rumors would suddenly blow up and be all over the place? Then the next day, the kids were on to the next, "Oh my god!" rumor.
Sex in the bathrooms? Of course there is. It varies from school to school throughout the country, but it's been happening since the very first school was built before any of us were even alive.

Why is anything happening in the bathrooms? I think it's easy enough for security to make periodic checks, right?
When I went to HS in the 80s, there wasn't smoking in the bathrooms because kids would smoke outside, and we had a relatively limited number of bathrooms anyway (about 10) so they could easily be checked.
Sometimes I wonder if there is a reluctance to enforce discipline in HS because "they'll do it anyway", "I wouldn't have liked it when I was in HS", "does it really hurt anything?", "they'll just find another place to do it", etc.
Well, when I drop off my kids at school, I'm depending upon the teachers and administrators to take over my parenting until my kids get home, and I don't allow my kids to smoke or have sex in the bathroom or anywhere in my home. Are they taking their role seriously enough??? Can we trust the school with our kids, or are they getting between us and our kids?

Just because surveillance is illegal doesn't mean it won't show up in our government institutions. Remember the story about disciplining a sophmore because a high school tapped into his webcam and snapped a picture of him apprently selling drugs? It turns out that he was giving a friend some candy:

It turns out that high schools might actually spy on our kids.

Security checks???? HA!!!! Get used to this phrase people-Due to budget cuts, PUSD cannot provide the following: ___________________________ .
We have classrooms that were 100 degrees today and could not be fixed because there are not enough people in the maintenance staff to take care of the problems. And you want security at the high schools? Come on!

The fact that the poster of this message wrote their heading in all capital letters tells me that they tend to fly off the handle at a moments notice. All they had to do was call the school, ask the secretary, hear the answer, and hang up. That's it-no one needed to know their name.

the principal of that particular high school told this to a group of students and the next day said he was joking... NOT COOL -

That's hilarious! The principal was joking and it ended up on Pleasanton Weekly.
Does anyone else think that some parents around here need to get jobs?

Obviously a principal would tell kids....so that they don't smoke in the bathrooms! Give me a break parents, the principal made a joke and we bite his/her head off. Get a job people. I liked the post that said we should monitor the bathrooms...oh ok should each teacher say "excuse me class but it is my turn to go make sure that no one is lighting up in the bathroom, be right back! Don't kill each other while I'm gone!!" Ya that is realistic.
"Can we trust the school with our kids??" I think the question should be "Can schools trust the parents with their kids?" PARENTS are the issue here, not the teachers and schools. Open your eyes parents.

So let me get this straight. Taxpayers are paying the salaries of people with State credentials for school administration who think it is hilarious to tell a bunch of kids---minors---that they are under surveillance by the District installing cameras in the bathrooms. Then they say they are joking a few days later?
I say get rid of the entire District administration office who tolerates this kind of 'joking' and hire some people who operate with some semblance of professionalism.
[No wonder the Pleasanton public voted NO on the parcel tax]

I don't think anyone said it was hilarious buddy. A principal told kids that there was a camera so that they wouldn't smoke in the bathrooms. Hasn't anyone told their kid that if they weren't good Santa Clause wasn't coming that year? SAME THING! Relax people and take a joke. Enough with the "I pay your salary!" crap. Would you like to volunteer your time to monitor the bathrooms so that kids can stop smoking or having sex or whatever in them?? Doubt you would want to!

Hate to break the news to you "YES!" (you have worked or worked for a school district, haven't you?. The reason I ask is that you spelled Claus "Clause"), but school administrators who place surveillance cameras in bathrooms generally get arrested, indicted, jailed, then upon release, must register as sex offenders, and rapidly become "former" school administrators.
Read Former Central Texas School Superintendent Faces Some Jail Time at Web Link
I can't recall that it is a felony for parents to talk about Santa Claus.

If there were cameras in the school bathrooms, they are probably already covered in wads of toilet paper that was moistened with water to make it stick.

Absolutely agree, we not only need to fire the entire staff, but all the buildings in the district should be torn down and rebuilt to make sure there aren't any cameras or listening devices.
And the poster earlier had it right on the parcel tax as as well: I voted a hearty "no" for this very reason!

HAHAH Did you just imply that because I accidentally spelled a word incorrectly that I must be a teacher or an administrator? If teachers and administrators are so stupid then why don't you become a teacher! You also implied that the principal is now going to be a registered sex offender. This is a funny forum! You are quite the jokester:)

All joking aside, my child came home today to tell me that while he was standing at a urinal in one of the PMS boys' rooms, another student put his hands on him and shoved him. I stress that this happened while my son was in the act of urinating. Now he's totally freaked and afraid to use the bathroom. Whether it was an inappropriate sexual overture or bullying, I really think PMS needs to step up its monitoring of what happens in their bathrooms during the school day. Maybe cameras aren't such a bad idea after all........

Another PMS parent,
How do you intend to pay for the personal security your child needs at school? A parcel tax? Come on! I'm not spending a single dime to pay for extra school personnel when what we really need are CUTS CUTS CUTS!
I know there are others on this site, like me, who are sick to death of taxes. Join me and Vote No on the Parcel Tax!
