Poll Shows The Tea Party Likes Big Government After All

Original post made by Harris, Downtown, on Jun 29, 2010

Poll: Tea partiers want gov’t to protect manufacturing jobs, impose tariffs to safeguard environment.

One of the organizing principles of the conservative-led tea party movement is an “aversion to big government,” with tea party organizers turning their ire on comprehensive health reform, clean energy legislation, and even mandatory trash collection. Yet a new poll finds that, despite their anti-government rhetoric, a majority of tea partiers favor the government enacting policies to protect manufacturing jobs and placing tariffs on goods from countries with weak environmental standards:

A new poll contradicts the widely held belief that the the tea party movement is opposed to government action to help the economy. It shows that self-described Tea Party supporters are very much in favor of government action to revitalize America’s manufacturing base.

Seventy-four percent of self-described Tea Party Supporters would support a “national manufacturing strategy to make sure that economic, tax, labor, and trade policies in this country work together to help support manufacturing in the United States,” according to the poll, put out by the Mellman Group and the Alliance for American Manufacturing. Likewise, 56 percent of self-described Tea Party Supporters “favor a tariff on products imported from other countries that are cheaper because they came from a country that does not have to comply with any climate change regulations in the country where the products were made.”

It remains to be seen if the corporate-funded astroturf groups like FreedomWorks and the Republican Party, both of which have courted the tea party movement, will be willing to champion these pro-worker and pro-environmental views movement members appear to have

only progressives could try and spin this answer on this poll into "Tea Party Likes Big Government" or better yet "Tea partiers want gov’t to impose tariffs to safeguard environment"

what a bunch o bull p____

the only thing that this poll shows is that DEM (83%) IND (78%) REP (74%) -- i.e. AMERICANS -- want a strong manufacturing base in this country

the poll question asks nothing about increasing environmental regulation or increasing the size of government to accomplish that

the fact is that most tea partiers and progressives probably have diametrically opposed views on HOW to accomplish that

progressives want more more more government controlling everything
tea partiers want to unleash the power of free markets

seems we had a previous poster on here who would cut and paste conservative opinion to these columns and was harshly criticized for it, now we have harris, the progressives version of pleasanton mom

As far as manufacuring, honestly how are we suppossed to compete with China, Korea...when they pay workers so little (along with the other manufacturing costs)? If you came up with a product and found out you can have it made in China for a tiny percentage of what it would cost to make it here what would you do? If a competitor is making the same product already overseas and you make it here you will have to price yourself out of the market. We hate giving jobs to overseas factories, but hate paying a cent more than we have to for a product. We hate sending our money overseas but want to create profitable and competetive businesses. We pay illegals to mow lawns, make our food, bus our tables, build our houses and as long as we are getting a good deal we don't complain. If you bought a product like a TV, computer, etc. that had all its components made in the USA and assembled here you wouldn't buy it. It might be made well, it might fit your philosophy, but it would cost more than you would spend.

Duh! Have you ever met a Tea Partier who wants to rescind Medicare and Social Security--both big government programs they benefit from? Of course they are hypocritical.
