San Joaquin County businessman Robert Beadles has withdrawn as a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 11th Congressional District contest to support San Ramon attorney David Harmer, now considered the front-runner in the party’s June 8 primary.

In making the announcement, Beadles also said he will now serve as a co-chair in the Harmer for Congress campaign.

Earlier, another 11th District candidate, Larry Pegram, withdrew from the race after Harmer announced his candidacy.

“David Harmer is a man of integrity and principle, and I believe he will win this seat for Republicans,” Beadles said in a statement. “There’s little doubt that our country faces an important crossroads; the 2010 elections will be among the most important in the past half century. Republicans everywhere should join me in supporting David Harmer so we can put our strongest candidate forward in the contest against Jerry McNerney.”

Congressman McNerney (D-Pleasanton) is running unopposed on the June 8 primary’s Democratic Party ticket for re-election to a third term in Congress.

Beadles joins Mitt Romney, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, National Tax Limitation Committee, 2008 nominee Dean Andal and others in supporting Harmer.

Harmer is campaigning as a lifelong Reagan Republican. His father, John Harmer, served as California’s Lieutenant Governor under Ronald Reagan. Early in his career, David Harmer represented the Pacific Legal Foundation, where he defended property rights and other issue in state and federal courts. He was also a Resident Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, and his book on education reform was published by the Cato Institute, a market-oriented public policy organization.

  1. Sal- Slime balls? I think you mean real business men with real experience and not career worthless politicians. Harmer is a hard working family man who wants to help stop the march toward socialism our country is taking. I would wager to say he would actually show up to town hall meetings…unlike McNerney who crawled under a rock last summer.

  2. Sal, sounds like you are suggesting the guilt-by-association that we are supposed to ignore when it comes to Obama, Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein, Reid….

  3. Don’t believe the smears, Harmer is a San Ramon resident, he lives about a mile up the road from the 11th CD, and his business and kids school take him in to CD-11 every day.

David Harmer will be the best representative for the area and for all of CD-11. He has proven conservative cred and he will fight Pelosi and the progressives agenda in DC.

There is no clearer choice in any US House race in this nation this year. You can vote for higher taxes and government expansion, or you can support a conservative like David Harmer who will fight for limited government, lower taxes, and work for repeal of the flawed and bloated health care legislation and to implement real reforms that do not destroy our economy and our kids futures

  4. We have never had such a great Congressman as Jerry McNerney. His hard work for us in District 11 (Where he lives) will be rewarded this November when we send him back to Washington D.C. to keep up the work for us all.
His leadership and hard work to increase the support we give to our veterans, soldiers and families has been second to none. We will give a polite NO THANK YOU to whomever the GOP picks.

  5. Harmer is literally a parody the typical Republican. It’s almost like he is robot that came off the assembly line at the GOP factory. He has almost no unique views that different from the typical right-wing platform and merely regurgitates Fox News talking points. On top that, he is a career politician (ran for office in Utah in 1996) who is simply shopping for a new district to impose his right-wing agenda.

You also gotta love Harmer’s fixation on Ronald Reagan. He mentions him so much you would think he wears Reagan pajamas.

  6. jimf01, with all due respect to your opinion my view point is that the candidate lives in District 11.

I feel the same way about Garamendi living within a “stone’s throw” of District 10, and would feel the same way if a Democrat from San Ramon running in District 11.

  7. Mr. Harmer also thought it was a valid point when he accused Garamendi, his opponent in the 2009 CD10 runoff race, of being “a career politician in search of a place to serve” because Garamendi didn’t live in the 10th District. Now, Mr. Harmer’s own words aptly apply to his own candidacy in CD11. Is it still a “smear” when the words are the candidate’s own?

“[C]ongressional politics is a national game” is how “jimf01” describes the situation in another thread regarding Mr. Harmer (“TEA Party Power – how you can help keep it going!”), which also fits with why “jimf01” in his post above refers to Wisconsin Rep. Ryan’s “Roadmap for America” when asked what reform proposals Mr. Harmer stood for.

I say that’s exactly why we cannot afford to elect a politician to represent CD11 who has absolutely no vested interest in our District. Not only does he not live in CD11, but there is nothing on his campaign website about CD11 at the local level. In addition, Mr. Harmer’s financing so far, as reported by the Federal Election Commission reflects that he is funded almost entirely by out-of-state and out-of-district politicians, PACs, lobbyists and individuals. In whose interest is he being paid to serve? It certainly doesn’t look like he has much invested in the 11th District’s. http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/com_detail/C00461657/

Rep. McNerney lives in Pleasanton, so even if our gerrymandered district is re-drawn and we’re lucky enough to, at least, have a whole Pleasanton if not the Tri-Valley as our CD, he has a vested interest in our continued well-being geographically. I don’t know about you, but I certainly didn’t feel represented by Mr. Pombo who made it very clear that his interest, investments, and representation was east of the Altamont.

As far as how Rep. McNerney’s campaign was funded, a comparison of individuals, committees, PACs and lobbyists between his campaign and Mr. Harmer’s current funding shows an abundance of funding from those individuals who actually lived and worked in our district, as well as from businesses that have a presence here like Roche/Genentech and Oracle in Pleasanton, Calpine in Dublin, and AT&T and Chevron in San Ramon. He also received money from groups interested in improving our environment, like the Sierra Club, solar and wind energy, and the Humane Society, as well as organizations that promote local products like the farms, wine and almonds. http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/can_detail/H4CA11081/

For an additional look at how Mr. Harmer views himself, I would refer you to an an interview he did in Dec09 with “The Mormon Times” that provides personal insight in the candidate’s own words. Mr. Harmer stated “he considers himself a Christian first, an American second, a conservative third and finally, a Republican.” http://mormontimes.com/people_news/people_church/?id=12200

By his own words or lack thereof, if we elect Mr. Harmer we will have a politician who settled on CD11 in his “search of a place to serve”, is not invested in CD11 giving us *no* real local representation at the national level, and says being an American is second to his faith putting in question his ability to separate church from state in decisions that affect all of us.

  8. There is your hypocricy and your BS line Rae, Harmer does have vested interests here, you and the Democrats had no problem voting in GaraSpendi, and Pombo was a homegrown cd-11 guy, but you didn’t like him either.
I am beginning to see a pattern, conservative BAD, liberal GODD, conservative BAD.
You are going to have to fill me in on what Jerry McNerney has done to represent the local interests of the majority Republican district population of CD-11 while voting with Nancy Pelosi better than 95% of the time.

  9. I’d rather have someone representing me from outside the District, who lives in San Ramon, than someone inside the District who lives in the Central Valley.

  10. You tell me what what Jerry McNerney has done to represent the local interests of the majority Republican district population of CD-11 while voting with Nancy Pelosi better than 95% of the time

  11. “jimf01”, given the usual nature of your postings, it certainly wasn’t a surprise for me to read that when you couldn’t discount any of what I said as untrue, you attacked me personally. LOL!! I take that as a compliment. Thank you!

You seem to feel that Rep McNerney should be representing only “the majority Republican district population of CD-11” during his tenure in Congress. Thank goodness he has taken it on to represent the interests of CD11 as a whole! For example, as a member of the “House Committee on Energy and Commerce” and the “House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs”, committees that definitely impact CD11, Rep. McNerney has sponsored the following bills:

HR4015 – Family Farm & Small Business Tax Relief Act – To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to extend certain estate tax provisions and restore and increase the estate tax deduction for certain family-owned business interests.

HR700 – Healthy Communities Water Supply Act – To amend the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to extend the pilot program for alternative water source projects.

HR1546 – Caring for Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury Act – To amend title 38, United States Code, to direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to establish the Committee on Care of Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury.

HR1774 – Smart Grid Advancement Act – To incorporate smart grid capability into the Energy Star Program, to reduce peak electric demand, to reauthorize energy efficiency public information program to include Smart Grid information, and for other purposes.

HR4620 – Small Business Job Creation Act of 2010 – To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to encourage hiring unemployed individuals.

HR4440 COMBAT Act – To amend title 37, United States Code, to increase the maximum monthly rate for the military special pay known as hostile fire pay, imminent danger pay, or hazardous duty pay, to increase the maximum monthly rate for the family separation allowance paid to deployed members of the Armed Forces, and to increase other special and incentive pays to recognize the service of members of the Armed Forces and encourage recruitment and retention.

HR2818 Methamphetamine Education, Treatment and Hope Act of 2009 – To amend the Public Health Service Act to provide for the establishment of a drug-free workplace information clearinghouse, to support residential methamphetamine treatment programs for pregnant and parenting women, to improve the prevention and treatment of methamphetamine addiction, and for other purposes.

From what you posted previously in this thread “jimf01”, Mr. Harmer evidently feels the policies laid out by Wisconsin Rep. Ryan are what we should be looking forward to in CD11. Let me see, Wisconsin . . . CD11 . . . Wisconsin . . . CD11. Nope, I’ll stick with someone who will represent CD11 locally at the national level, rather than vote for someone whose plan for CD11 is limited in scope by the Wisconsin/RNC/Tea Party “Roadmap for America”.

  12. Rae – You need to figure out what a personal attack is, me calling your comments hypocritical and BS isn’t a personal attack.
I do (mostly!) refrain from all personal attacks, because that is the trademark tactic of the left. See for example smears of Beadles and Harmer in this thread.

The House of Representatives votes on national issues, portraying Rep Paul Ryan’s plan as a non CD-11 issue and/or a Wisconsin issue is completely ludicrous, particularly immediately after you post McNerney’s highly distinguished (or maybe should be extinguished, none of these proposals made it out of committee) record, I guess veterans, the smart grid and small businesses only exist in CD-11? Your hypocrisy, on parade again.

Jerry McNerney voting with Nancy Pelosi better than 95% of the time is in no way representing the interests of CD-11 as a whole. It is representing a progressive agenda that will destroy America

  13. We should be asking one very important question: why is it that Harmer who does not live in the 11th District should even be a contender? Republican Representative Tom McClintock in the 4th is from SoCal. He open the door for Democrat Garamendi for the 10th and now we have Harmer.

Enough. If the Republicans in the 11th are unable to find any intelligent person to run then that’s their problem. This about our District not about some contest the Republicans seem to want to play at any cost and damn the locals.

And, please let’s stop with the name calling. All you did Sal was open the door for Green and Saul Alinsky.
