Livermore police arrested a woman Tuesday in connection with the 2009 death of her infant son after a yearlong investigation revealed a “deliberate and conscious disregard” for the infant’s life, police said.

Police and medical personnel were dispatched to Jessica Adams’ Spruce Street home at about 5 a.m. on March 19, 2009, on a report of an unresponsive infant. The baby, 2-month old Gary Sterling, was transported to ValleyCare Hospital in Pleasanton where he was pronounced dead.

Adams, 25, told police that she had accidentally suffocated her son when she rolled over on top of him while sleeping on the couch, police said.

Investigators said they have since determined that Adams, who they say is a habitual methamphetamine user, had been using the drug continuously over the four days before the child’s death and had known she was incapable

of safely caring for Gary.

At the time, officers did not know that Adams had two other children, ages 3 and 5, who had been taken away from her by Child Protective Services because they were born with meth in their systems, police said.

Since then, investigators have determined that Adams is a longtime abuser of meth, with numerous arrests on drug-related charges, according to police. She has been in and out of drug rehabilitation programs, police said.

Adams had decided a few days before Gary’s death to celebrate her March 15 birthday by using meth, police said. She had gone to a home in Richmond on March 13, 2009, where she smoked meth continually for four days.

Police said that although Adams was aware of the dangers of caring for the baby while under the influence, she did not make arrangements for others to care for him although opportunities to do so existed.

Detectives arrested Adams Tuesday in the 1300 block of Ora Avenue in Livermore.

  1. It is insane that we do not have forced sterilization laws for both men and woman who have proven they are irresponsible or dangerous parents.

  2. This is sad. A baby is dead, the mother is a meth head, and how is this cycle going to end? She has 2 other kids that she has lost to the state, has been in and out of rehab programs and still smokes meth?

This young woman need to have her tubes tied. No more babies for her to harm!! She needs an inpatient program for about a year and a lot of prayer. Maybe then she can turn her life around..

  3. The hospital should not have released this baby to mom…adoption ..she and babe probably both tested positive at childs birth agree with tying tubes..lucky for the other kids that weren’t in her care! she is an addict…her kids is the least of her concerns!
