The Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced Wednesday that it is funding more than 200 electric vehicle charging stations at 48 locations around the region, including a station in Dublin.

The 226 stations, combined with about 70 already in place in the Bay Area, are designed to form a region-wide infrastructure network for electric vehicles, according to district officials.

“As automakers provide more electric vehicle options, it’s important that the infrastructure is in place to support these cleaner transportation options,” Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the air district, said in a statement.

The charging stations will be placed in parking lots and garages located near highways that will be available for use by the general public.

Recipients of grants from the air district include San Francisco, which is receiving $100,000 for 60 stations in the city.

Alameda County is receiving $84,760 for 40 stations in Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward and Dublin. Santa Clara County is receiving $85,720 for 40 stations in San Jose.

Santa Rosa is receiving $42,860 for 20 stations in Santa Rosa, while Sonoma County is receiving $72,900 for an additional 30 stations in the city.

Palo Alto is receiving $12,000 for six stations in the city, while Better Place, an electric vehicle company, received $30,000 for 30 additional stations in Palo Alto.

All stations must be installed within two years to be eligible for the grants, according to air district spokeswoman Jennifer Alverson-Jones.

About $1.5 million in funding from the air district is still available for alternative fuel vehicles and infrastructure projects. Grant applications and additional eligibility criteria can be found on the air district’s Web site at www.baaqmd.gov/tfcaregional.

  1. How about sending that money to the school district? What a waste of money at this time when all schools are hurting. Did anyone read the article in the Times this morning about our community colleges? They deserve the money more than an electric car station.

  2. Why does it have to be one or the other? The Air District should be funding things to improve the air for us and our children, which is what they’re doing. I too want more money spent on education but I can’t see how that would come out of the budget of the Air District or why they would be susceptible to criticism for doing their job?

  3. Government paid is NOT true. In the end we pay not just thru the government, but in OUR ELECTRIC BILLS. PG&E officials have acknowledged when just TWO electric cars plug into your neighborhood, it then becomes a “PEAK USAGE” TIER ! So your ‘smart meter’ will BILL everything YOU use at that time in TOP TIER PRICING….YOUR higher bill will be paying PG&E also. This is such a crime against ignorant RATEPAYERS ! This is why they are trying to get the “SMART METERS” as soon as possible….so you can get charged more. They tell you it’s so YOU can MONITOR YOUR usage and CUT DOWN ! ! ! Twisted ! WHY would I want to do without, to subsidize some joker that just bought an $80,000.oo elec car. IF they haven’t campaigned for ALL-CLEAN, ABUNDANT nuclear power…then they can do WITHOUT !!! NUCLEAR POWER FIRST…. THEN elect cars !!!

  4. “PG&E officials have acknowledged when just TWO electric cars plug into your neighborhood, it then becomes a “PEAK USAGE” TIER ! So your ‘smart meter’ will BILL everything YOU use at that time in TOP TIER PRICING….”

Really? I’d love to read more about this; can you please provide a link to that information for everyone’s benefit?

  5. Really?, I don’t know how to create a link. It was a detailed article at a conference. Smart meters will provide ‘current’ usage info. The meters are NOT about meter ‘readers’ . They’re are about exchanging information, i.e. tier pricing, etc. I didn’t allow the installer to install a smart meter….they will work against us.
PG&E could have focused more on SMART energy that implanting this big brother monitor inside our homes.

  6. I understand what you’re saying about the subversive intent of the new Smart meters; I’d just like to see this somewhere in writing, published on the web, so that I (and all of us) have it for reference and can use it to fight against PG&E when the new rates roll around. Or more importantly, before. Even if you can’t post a link, if you could tell us *which* conference and *what* date and *where* it was, that would help. One can always Google to get these things, just give us a clue about where you heard or read it.

  7. The “Smart Meter” only records(reports)your individual household usage, unrelated to what others in your neighborhood use. There is no “neighborhood peak usage tier”. You can’t be charged more just because others in your neighborhood use more electricity than your household…

I wouldn’t think someone could prevent PG&E from installing the meter on their individual gas and electric service, short of removing the service from ones property. The meters are PG&E property…

  8. JERRY ? ? WHAT makes up a “peak usage period” ???..Lots of users !!IF YOU want AC at 6:00pm & watch Larry King at 6:00, your usage is more that it was for your empty house at 4:pm….and your neighbor does the same…it becomes a peak period. OUR bills will be CALCULATED by WHEN we use power…NOT the KW over the month!!! So your neighbors plug in their DYING elec cars, YOUR pricing tier will be higher than if his sucking elect car wasn’t sucking your neighborhood power…YOU will pay MORE because of the DEMAND at that minute !!! Big brother’s watching ! We’re hostages to the insanity. Should have been power first, THEN cars ! ! ! !

  9. Jerry? You must read by candlelight. RIGHT NOW a small family in small quarters can easily be in THIRD TIER PRICING. If you run AC, you’re in the 4th tier now. Look at your bill! Instead of current monthly kw, the smart meters will allow PG&E to calculate WHEN you use your power…if it’s when your neighbor’s car is sucking (enough for 3 households) from your neighborhood’s sub-station, your usage at THAT PEAK usage time, will be billed accordingly. They don’t WANT you to know that now. But, the smart meters have amazing technologies for many future decades to come.

  10. I agree the smart meter will report when you are using electricity…

If I’m not mistaken, the “peak usage period” is between certain hours(the time of day when demand for electricity is greatest – the period from when the masses arrive home from work and turn on AC, TV, lights, electric appliances, ect., until they settle down for the evening)…

It’s my understanding, if you use electricity during the peak period, you will be charged at that rate. It makes no difference how many neighborhood cars are plugged into the system, they won’t affect your bill. Only your personal choice to use electricity during that peak period will affect your bill…

The purpose of the “peak period rate” is to encourage consumers to curtail usage when there is a “strain” on the electric grid due to lack of generation/transmission capability to meet the demand. Build more power generation plants, along with the associated transmission lines and substations, and there would be no strain on demand, but certain groups will not allow that to happen(example – the transmission line proposed to run through the Livermore winery area)…

  11. I’m glad networks of transmission line were stopped here, like they are everywhere. IT’s SO tragic that Obama has promised (Dem donor) $$ 1.37 BBillion (of our tax $$) to (Dem donor) Woolard to start BrightSource Solar to plant fields & fields of panels in the Mojave Desert. SO UGLE new transmission lines are needed to go the MILES & MILES to transport the DISTANT power. Those NEW lines would NOT be necessary, if they would fire up the other 2 (2 of 4) reactors at Diablo Canyon Nuclear plant, which HAS BEEN PROVIDING 25% of PG&Es power for 30 years (Moonbeam stopped the other 2). Could just plug in now if we were doing that instead of stupidly planting panels in a distant desert. AFTER the Billions have been spent we are going to look back at this insanity and say HOW did the ignorant public allow such insanity. Wake up people !

  12. Even if the additional reactors were “fired up” at Diablo Canyon there would be a need for new transmissiom lines to transport the power generated. The existing power lines couldn’t handle the additional load…

Ever noticed the sagging in the 500kv transmission lines running through the Sacramento Valley during the hot summer days? That’s caused by heating of the transmission lines due to “heavy loading”. They can’t handle additional loading(amperage)…

Seems we want ample power in our homes but are not willing to allow what’s necessary to provide the power(ugly transmission lines). Electricity can’t be transmitted through the air. Wait until the “rolling blackouts”(rationing)start, then watch all the finger pointing…

  13. PG&E is already installing Smart Meters whether you want them or not.

Earlier they offered to install, and we refused.

Now a guy was going around putting them in out area.
They didn’t ask. They didn’t notify anyone.
They didn’t even come to the door when we WERE home.
They also cut the power to the house, which stops all your clocks, shuts down your computer, surges all the appliances.
If you were on vacation, then all your timers would be messed up.
If you have medical devices, this could kill you.
Why? So they can cut your power off remotely if you miss a payment, (or if they make an error- or get hacked) , and charge you more.
Just look at all the articles about how the poor people in the valley have had their bills soar. Guess what: We’re next.

  14. It’s just another liberal, feel good giove away of my tax dollars. It’s all fun and games until the money runs out and no more can be printed.
Wait until the first Dubliner electrocutes themselves trying to charge theri wind-up car—–then, we can bring the lawyers in to end this folly.
