What happened on Stoneridge & Springdale?

There are flowers & pictures & poems against a tree near Springdale on Stoneridge Drive. I have seen nothing in the paper. What happened & when?

Wouldn't be surprised if he fell into was of those GIANT potholes on Stoneridge Dr. They're all over the slow lane from Foothill to 680!
