That's not a carjacking in the southern states. I had the misfortune to live in a high-crime southern state, and carjackings there are a little different. A common scenario is you're in your car at a red light, and a guy with a gun demands to be let in. He decides who drives, and your destination is your ATM, where you withdraw money for him. Then he lets you go and takes your money and your car, sometimes you're beaten or raped before he takes off, and it's all still referred to in the media as a carjacking. The kidnapping is part of the deal, otherwise it's just stealing a car. I looked carjacking up and the definition from one dictionary is "the violent theft of an occupied vehicle."

My car was almost stolen in that parking lot at about 1pm on a bright sunny day. It was near the back of the area infront of Babys R Us. The punched in the lock but something must have went wrong because that's as far as they got. Dublin police showed up quickly and I was shocked at how unsurprised they were. I asked about it being in the middle of the day on a busy Sunday and they acted as it happened all the time. They said my Caddy would have been stripped and sold for parts within 3 hours of it being taken. Insurance paid nobody was caught, now I check out everyone around the lot or sitting in their cars when I park.
