The Pleasanton Weekly will be this year’s sponsor of major downtown events, including First Wednesday street parties and the 2009 Concerts in the Park series, the Pleasanton Downtown Association announced yesterday.

Nickie Hoppe said the newspaper’s online and print media organization’s proposals to sponsor the main PDA events were accepted because, “Yours is a news organization that is Pleasanton-based, well read throughout Pleasanton and is a strong booster of business vitality in Pleasanton.”

“Since starting your newspaper nine years ago, you have become the voice of Pleasanton and the PDA is honored to have so much support from the Weekly,” Hoppe said.

Hoppe said the Weekly’s sponsorship will include First Wednesday street parties, Concerts in the Park, Magical Holiday Evening and the Hops & Vine Fall Fest.

“The Pleasanton Weekly is a perfect fit for us,” she added. “Our staff is very excited to be partnering with the Pleasanton Weekly this year.”

Hoppe, who has handled scores of events for the PDA, also announced that she will be leaving the organization Feb. 18 to join her husband Michael, a retired division fire chief for the city of Alameda, in a more leisurely lifestyle, which will include some travel. The couple lives in Pleasanton.

“You’ll still see me around,” said Hoppe, “only at the concerts, for example, I’ll be out in the crowd instead of handling the Friday night events and on stage announcing prize winners.”

Christine Salidivar, executive director of the PDA, said a search is under way for Hoppe’s successor.
