I am certain there is more to this than the owner simply not renewing the lease. The owner of the Pleasanton Hotel restaurant has had ongoing issues with this landlord for years. It would seem like a really perplexing time to allow a stallwart tenant to move out, given the current state of the economy. I wonder if the building owner has the rights to the name "The Pleasanton Hotel"?

According to the Images of America book "Pleasanton", the building known as "The Pleasanton Hotel" has carried that name continuously since 1934. Lease-holders may come and go, and owners may change, but it seems the building "owns" the name.

Odd that the PW hasn't picked up this story, considering that Jeb Bing has been running articles lately regarding both the decline and the robustness of the downtown businesses. Seems the Pleasanton Hotel is an important "anchor" business to the northmost end of Main Street, and is quite the historical institution for Pleasanton, through various transformations. If it is indeed going out of business, shouldn't this be an important news item?

Has anyone supposed that maybe the building owner has a new lessee lined up to run the restaurant? The only thing stated to the original poster by the restaurant staff is the present restaurant is closing. If the hearsay is true that the building owner and lessee have clashed often, why would the building owner not swap out the tenant when the lease is up if he can find a new one?

Some one in Almo owns the PH and according to someone I know who works there, the building has been for sale for a long time. The whole thing does not make sense but they are closing the 31st.

I have worked at the Pleasanton hotel off and on for a few years and this just makes me sad....I love that place and the feeling there, especially at the holidays and there are so many older people that have been going there for years...this is a shame...

Even if it closes, remodels, opens under another name, which it is in serious need of a remodel, it will always, always be knows at the Pleasanton Hotel, call it whatever you want.....

If I was the lessee, I'd have petitioned to break the lease after they painted it that hideous salmon and purple!

Maybe this is why the chef left and went to Eddie Pappa's..??

I heard a rumor that the building owner is going to run the place once the old tennant leaves (something about the son being a chef). I also heard some interior renovations/updates might be in the works.

Neil Marquis (the chef mentioned above) is doing a GREAT job at Eddie Pappa's btw!

I have an office above the Pleasanton Hotel. I spoke with my landlord yesterday. The Hotel will close for renovations on December 31. It will reopen in a few months under new management.

Be sure you have the facts right about the Pleasanton Hotel "closing" before you make a judgement.

Bill couldn't make a new lease happen so it fades into the sunset like all good "old style" restaurants have seem to go. This new restaurant that is to open to "attract a younger crowd" I hope is worth the gamble for the rich Alamo property owner. I can say for a fact that I will not try the new restaurant. I have been going to the P-Hotel for the last 15yrs and have a lot of good memories there, dining with my dad (who since passed), having my wife's BD at the sumptuous buffet, and most recently eating Thanksgiving dinner there (IT WAS PACKED). I loved the traditional food and the courteous staff. I missed Neil when he left, but still enjoyed the meals of recent times. I guess being 38 isn't young enough to be considered when it comes to finding a good place to eat. Let's amke way for the youngsters......
