Jerry McNerney fails 'truth meter', makes false accusations against Dean Andal

Original post made by Fact-checker, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Oct 20, 2008

Interesting that incumbent Congressman Jerry McNerney, whom the Pleasanton Weekly has already endorsed, has lowered himself to apparent false accusations against his challenger, Dean Andal, as reported in another local newspaper over the past weekend:

Web Link

The Weekly may want to rethink their endorsement, and/or at least confront McNerney on where he got his facts from, and whether he plans to continue running ads based on apparent falsehoods.

Is this really who you want representing the 11th Congressional District?

Quoting McNerney, is this "tackling the issues important to the middle class like the economy, energy and honoring our veterans"?

Is this "spreading our [McNerney's] positive message."?

Doesn't sound too positive to me. Sounds like 'anything to get re-elected' politics.

No thanks.

I'm voting for Andal. McNerney seems like a nice enough guy, but anyone who votes so closely to Pelosi scares the heck out of me, especially now. Andal will fight for lower taxes and less government, McNerney will raise taxes and add government. 'Nuff said for me.

From my earlier post...
Doesn't make any difference what he says to you or me...his congressional voting record is in lockstep with the democratic leadership which doesn't demonstrate any independent thinking on his part. Nobody, can agree 100% of the time on everything. I'm am certain he is a nice guy, but he just doesn't impress me...sorry

Your right-wing propaganda fails the "truth meter." McNerney will easily defeat a republican hack like Andal. Hope you redneck republicans wake up.

Frank, thanks for the personal attacks. If you'd like to tell me why you think my fear of more taxes and bigger government are flawed, I'd like to hear it. But is it really necessary to call someone all the names? Why the personal hatred for dissenting voices?

Go back to your FOX News, Sean Hannity propaganda and Cialis commercials. Republicans for less government? Have you read the news this month? Socializing banks, trillion dollar bailouts of the Wall Street fat cats. Have you heard about Medicare Part D that the Republicans ramrodded through congress? You must be living in a Bizzaro world if you still think Republicans are for less government.

So the problem is that McNerney doesn't qualify as a 'maverick' because he's voted with his party most of the time? I don't agree with everything the democratic party does, particularly pertaining to funding the Iraq occupation, but I don't see how he's been voting so far as a bad thing. If you're a democrat, you would certainly want your party to be cohesive and make decisions as a whole. I think you don't like him because he votes democratic, rather than republican, but then he's a democrat so it makes sense. I know now that McCain/Palin has inspired a whole 'reformer' theme, but they are only saying that so McCain can distance himself from Bush. It's pure propaganda and apparently isn't working very well for him.

McNerney makes false accusations, pure and simple, Frank, et al. I didn't report it (neither did the Weekly, btw), but the Tri-Valley Herald reporter did, and kudos to her for investigating the claims made by McNerney against Andal and determining that they are FALSE.

Read the article, Frank.

If that's the kind of Congressman you want, it speaks volumes about who you are, along with your juvenile name-calling.

Fact-Checker,

Why does FOX News have so many commercials for Cialis, Viagra and Levitra?

Wild guess... Because a lot of men watch that channel?

All I said was that I will vote for Andal because McNerney is more likely to support Pelosi's higher taxes and larger government positions. This isn't a Democrat or Republican thing, it's a taxing and bloated government thing. I agree, some Republicans are hard to discern from the Democrats on these issues- I say throw those bums out, too!

If you are for higher taxes and more government, please let me know why and maybe you can change my position.

I think McNerney's negative TV ads and mailers are over the top. It really puts me off. I don't vote for candidates like that. Keep it honest and reasonable.

Pelosi's higher taxes??? You have got to be kidding.

The last years have put us in the largest hole we have ever been in and that was off a budget surplus! How the Republican Party can claim small government anymore is beyond me!

Please and Andal is in favor of alternative energy, right. I listened in on a town hall phone call and was aghast at the man's lack of knowledge. Drilling for oil won't make it more available to us unless we mandate that private businesses sell directly to the US. We could accomplish that by just mandating that they sell to us and not to the highest bidder overseas. Being for increased drilling is not enough. These are private companies drilling now. How is Andal going to MAKE them sell the oil to the US?

Also when asked if Andal would have gone into IRAQ he replied that he was not running for President and never would and it was the President's job to declare war. WHAT? He is running for Congress and doesn't know that CONGRESS has the POWER to declare war.

I want someone there who has at least READ the Constitution even if I don't agree with him all of the time.

McNerney has my vote.

Dear anonymous,

Despite the constitutional requirement that Congress declare war, in practice, formal Declarations of War have occurred only upon prior request by the President. And contrary to the popular opinion that the framers of the Constitution intended that the President cannot engage in war without an act of Congress, in fact the framers chose the final wording with the intent of "leaving to the Executive the power to repel sudden attacks" without the explicit approval of Congress.

On at least 125 occasions, the President has acted without prior express military authorization from Congress. That includes both Democratic and Republican Presidents.

With the exception of President Clinton's use of U.S. troops in the 78-day NATO air campaign against Serbia during the Kosovo War, in all other cases, the President has asserted the constitutional authority to commit troops without the necessity of Congressional approval.

Nice try parsing Mr. Andal's words to suit your opinion and attack, but the facts show that what he said is pretty accurate, as opposed to the false claims of Mr. McNerney. Let's see his facts.

Funny, I haven't seen those ads against Mr. Andal running on TV anymore since the Tri-Valley Herald article ran last Saturday.

I wonder why...
