motorcycle noise

Original post made by downtown diner, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Aug 25, 2008

An article regarding excessive motorcycle noise in the PW from April of 2004 states, in part, "We're going to start taking an enforcement stance," said Lt. Mark Senkle of the Pleasanton Police Department. "We will be citing them for excessive noise."

So, when might that happen? A beautiful dining experience was ruined this weekend by Harley riders sitting at the light and revving their engines for minutes at a time. Several diners walked to the sidewalk and threatened to throw something at the riders yet the loud revving continued. This kind of careless disregard for people, and the complete lack of any enforcement, causes many of us to want nothing less than a complete end to any Harleys in this town.

Oh sure. Throw things at them. That'll fix it!!

Revving the throttle/engine is a Harley driver's way of saying.. "You're sooooo good lookin'!"

Sit back and enjoy it! People who eat outdoors will hear outdoor noises!

I'm with unclehomerr. You want to dine out, be waited on and yet you "pay" for a table on a sidewalk? And expect silence? *sheesh*

If you want a nice dining experience, try taking a table INSIDE a restaurant. Or better yet, stay home where you can control your surroundings to some extent.

When did Main Street get so "stuffy?"

I don't know where downtown diner was but our family was seated inside a restaurant with doors and windows closed when the harley riders pulled up to the light. The noise was deafening. It isn't flattering, it isn't enjoyable and it isn't funny. Grow up guys and take that nonsense somewhere else. Like about a thousand miles from where we have to hear it. Not wanting the windows rattled and our eardrums assaulted has nothing to do with being "stuffy".

Why are some motorcycles quiet and others deafening loud? It's obviously possible to have a quiet one, and they should be required to be. Don't cars have to have mufflers?

Beatrice,

Harley owners pride themselves on the noise and yes, they are required to have mufflers. Cars that speed are breaking the law and so are motorcycles that make too much noise. Why don't our Pleasanton police officers cite them? Who knows. These loud bikes, and the people who rev the engines up to make even more noise, need to be removed from our streets. If the Harley riders want to hang out at Tullys and show off their bikes, fine. No one is objecting to that. Just knock off the noise! We are not impressed.

The noise issue with "murder" cycles on Main Street is hardly a new one. A big reason I stay away. From the beginning I viewed it as something deserving of the receiving end of a 25 mm exploding round from a Bradley (or a burst of three). However, no one seems to have complained, until now.

I think Cholo's Plutonians somehow think it is quaint to have their downtown dominated on weekends by pot-bellied, bearded, and long-haired over 50 hell's angels wanna-bees with money to burn but no brains to go with it. So, put up with it.

For me, some day I may actually care to spend more time downtown and then I'm gonna buy me a Bradley when they hit the surplus market and drive it down Main, 25 mm gun and all.

If the noise exceeds legal decibel levels, the police can cite the offenders -- including kids playing their car stereos too loud while driving down Main Street.

But I still say, why pay to eat on a sidewalk and then bitch about it?

Revving the motor endlessly is what gives these guys a bad rep. These "loud" bikes mentioned are absolutely way beyond the legal db output allowed by law. The police are choosing to not enforce the law.

Has anybody waited until they parked their bikes....and then bump into one and knock it over?? If it happens everytime they drive like A-holes, then maybe they won't do it anymore....

Main Street Dining?, I guess you don't read too well. The complaints were from people who were INSIDE not on the sidewalk. No matter, the noise is unreasonable and if our cops would bother to enforce it we would not have to use UNreasonable's suggestion. Although I think it would be great to try it, the "pot-bellied, bearded, long-haired, hell's angels wanna-bees" need a dose of their own medicine. Now that's a show I would pay to see.

Downtown Diner -- The comment BY YOU of "Several diners walked to the sidewalk and threatened to throw something at the riders yet the loud revving continued" lead me to believe these were outside (and immature) diners.

Are any of those complaining about lack of enforcement taking their words from this message board down to the Police Station? And are you asking they enforce just the (again, YOUR words) "Harley riders sitting at the light" or also the kids pumping music out their car windows?

Yeah...what about the car stereos and now that you mentioned it, how about doing something with all those strollers!! there should be a stroller lane in the street because theres not enough room on the sidewalks!!! A crying baby is just as annoying as a motorcycle. And if we are trying to improve the downtown experience, then how about banning dogs too. They are filthy animals and they should be able to walk up and smell myself, or my family.... Lets start somewhere people....

I never considered that my music bothered anyone. I'll confess I do turn the volume up a bit to drown out the noise of forks scraping the plate and wine corks popping. I thought all those people running out to the curb just wanted to hear Little Richard! Maybe if I stopped and threw something at them.

It really does ruin a nice dining experience when those damn motorcycles have to make so much noise. It would be nice it they'd be hit with a really severe fine or heck, even jail time. It's sad that people can't be considerate on their own and we need to have laws to enforce common decency.

I used to enjoy sitting downlown in the evening or on the weekends to enjoy a nice dinner outside (or even inside) at one of the restaurants on main street. However, the Harleys have been an extreme nuisance.

A small amount of noise is unavoidable anywhere you choose to eat outside, but what the Harleys do is excessive. There are times they make it sound like a jet aircraft is about to take off. I wish the police would finally do something about this.

that's OK Cholo. There's no ordinance on being a leaky pinhead yet.

Nobody dining on Main Street expects it to be silent, and people do tolerate the occasional rev. And most of them do. But there are a few Harley riders who look around first to make sure they have an audience and then gun and gun and gun. that's just rude and stupid. As usual, a few immature jerks tar everyone.

But back to the original point. Are the cops going to do anything about it? Are they actually going to get out of their air-conditioned, sound-proofed offices on these hot summer days.

Hey Chief Fraser, care to comment about when your're going to walk the talk?

It's time that PPD started agressively enforcing this. Main Street is high profile for Pleasanton and very close to the police station. If you can do as you please here, expect trouble of greater magnitude in other parts of the City. A zero tolerance for illegal behavior, such as exhibition of speed, prevents things like the multiple armed robberies we've seen this month. For skeptics, research what affect William Bratton's "broken window" policy did to crime in NYC.

This is too funny and I don't even own a Harley!!!

A few excerpts that were very amusing:

Diners threatened to throw something at them from the sidewalk but they continued to rev um....

Complete end to Harleys from this town....

Loud bikes and people that rev the engine need to be removed from our streets....

Pop them with a Bradley 25mm exploding round - maybe three....

Buy a surplus Bradley and drive it down Main Street...with cannon attached....

And The Winner Is: Wait until they park their bikes....then bump into one and knock it over(UNreasonable and downtown diner, when do you plan to do this? I'd like to be present at this event. It's been a long time since I've witnessed a good old fashion a== whooping applied by a pot-bellied, bearded, long-haired, Hell's Angel wanna-be)....:)

We were having breakfast at Vic's outside when a guy from the table next to us left and fired up his hog. The back end was pointed directly at us, he didn't care, and he took his sweet time revving before he pulled away, while we choked on the exhaust. My young daughter covered here ears. We talked about how they think it makes them look important, but really it makes them look stupid. Obviously, they're making up for inadequacies in other (ahem) areas. Same goes for the loud stereos.

And we live near Vineyard and Bernal by the bridge. Even with our windows closed, we're rattled by the revving at all hours. That's aside from the squeeling tires as cars speed around the corner toward Livermore, and the BOM ba BOM BOM of their stereos while they're waiting at the light.

I sat out on main with my son having dinner outside the 360 Buritto, there is average bike noise which is noisy but I can deal with it.

Until there was one time with this guy whose bike must have parts added to exaggerate the sound, he sat reving it showing off to his buddies, then rode down main it was like gunshots, my ears were in pain from it and the jerk came back through again.

I'm glad PPD is doing something but about the noise but its a shame immature guys like the one I mentioned that are wrecking it for the more respectful bikers.

On Channel 30 "Pleasanton Cops" a PPD officer said it is a violation of state laws to make modifications to factory installed equipment on vehicles and motorcycles, such as replacing the muffler to produce more sound and lowering the vehicle body(body can't be lower than the bottom of the wheel rim). He also stated if, in the officer's opinion, the noise was over the limit a citation could be issued.

There you go - stop threatning to throw dinner rolls, remove them from "our" streets, push over bikes or pop them with a 25mm cannon. Instead, start calling the police department, if you so desire....

The Pleasanton police need to issue tickets to these idiots on loud motorcycles. It's disrespectful, and not just on main street. The police would probably find these idiots have other un-resolved citations or warrants that would get these retards off the streets.

What has happened to Pleasanton? It has become a bunch of whiners! You make it sound like these are bad people riding down the streets of Pleasanton! Most of these riders are just like you. They work hard every day and on the weekends want to enjoy some down-time so they get on their motorcycles and ride. Yes, some are louder than they should be but you shouldn't blame all riders for a few rude ones. If you don't like the exhaust then you should be eating indoors!
Quit your whining and start enjoying your own life. I think you are just jealous because your wife won't let you have your own Harley.
