Both sides of fence meet Monday
Residents, school officials agree to base rock path, opening another gate
by Emily Atwood

Amador Valley High School Principal Bill Coupe facilitated what was said to be the final meeting Monday night discussing the school's rear entrance off of Gatetree Circle. Attended by a group of about 30 residents and parents, the consensus was to possibly open another gate until the school district could lay ground rock over the fire path.

Coupe and several residents said the fence--that replaced a gate earlier this school year that once allowed campus entry by way of the sports fields--is an effective solution to the concerns of traffic, parking and safety that many residents said lowered their quality of life. A chain link fence now re-routes students around the edge of campus--adding about 200 to 300 yards to the route--on a fire road that heads toward the parking lot, not the classrooms.

Even though a general agreement was reached, members of both sides expressed frustration and said their compromises were greater. In a show of hands to who wanted the gate reopened, about nine people showed interest.

Only one student attended the meeting. She, along with a handful of parents, complained of mud along the new path making the path practically unusable. To make the route more accessible during inclement weather, Hugh Anton, district director of architectural planning and management, said the school district offered to pay $16,700 to have a base rock layer installed on the fire path. He was unsure of where that money would come from.

Some were only moderately pleased at this solution, as Anton said the construction would start once the rain cleared up and couldn't take place on the weekend because of overtime fees for workers.

One resident said he used the path to get to the meeting and insisted that the path was not muddy as some claimed, and held up his clean shoe as proof. Another resident said the path need only be leveled and set up to drain properly.

Coupe and Amador's vice principals traversed the path after the meeting during on and off rain showers. While there were puddles, he said "there are ways to walk through that are passable." Until the district is able to lay down the base rock on the fire path, Coupe said a compromise on rainy days could be opening a fence near the tennis courts so students can walk on asphalt.

Some residents shared concern over the fire route improvements, saying it could make it more attractive to students and reverse the progress made in regards to traffic and parking. There was also no advancement on the idea of permit parking, as Coupe said it would be handled by the city, not the school district. There were mixed views regarding permit parking, with some not wanting their visitors to be ticketed.

After the last meeting, Coupe said the residents were to meet on their own about the changes and bring a consensus message to him prior to Monday's meeting. However, he said he didn't hear back from them. For those with further concern about the projected changes, he said he welcomes feedback. He can be reached at 461-6100.

One question came to mind after reading this article.

Did Bill Coupe ever mention that the District and Amador would prefer the sports fields not be a cut-through now that thousands upon thousands of our tax dollars were spent on rehab?

I find it ironic that this is said to be a "neighbor" problem when I believe the school and district (based on conversations I've had with Lou Cesario in the past) would prefer field access be limited.

I notice the word "honesty" was left out of item 5 on the Good Neighbor Policy. (Web Link

This is NIMBY at its worst!!!!
That path was a vital access to the school for decades. Those residents bought their homes knowing it was there. They bought their homes knowing they shared a boundary with a high school if it is not working for them they should relocate; the school will always be there. They have no place demanding change that causes a burden on the greater community.
As long as one resident wanted to keep the path open the historical precedence should have prevailed.

Matt;

The path that was a vital access to the school for decades is now dealing with a different type of student and community.

If you differ, then I suggest you read the story from this publication at this Web Link

I can tell you the High School I attended decades ago is worlds different than when I was a student there.

I agree with Matt. Take the pricipal up on his offer. Everyone disappointed with the decision to close the field gate and the associated cost of $16700.00 should call the school and voice their concern. It would cost the district nothing to re-open the gate and that money could be spent where it is really needed in the district. It is really a shame those few neighbors aren't being "good neighbors" themselves with regard to closing the gate.

Again I remind folks there is also a desire to minimize sport field cut-through after spending thousands upon thousands of our tax dollars on the track, football field and new softball field areas.

Make sure to ask Bill Coupe, if you call, whether that played a role in the decision to keep the gate closed.

If any of you think there is no expense to maintaining the fields and addressing damage done due to "cut-through" traffic, then I really want a piece of the fairy tale land you're living in.

To Another Gatetree Resident,
Not sure if you were at the meeting, but I was, and when Bill Coupe was asked about having kids travel across the field, he said something to the effect that in a perfect world, he would not have kids cutting across the field, but it was not of big concern to him. THAT was obvious. This is an all weather field and will sustain plenty of foot traffic. Your point is not valid.
The few neighbors who cried "safety" and had the gate closed will now cost the district over $16,000 in an already tight budget. But what do you care....you don't have children in the PUSD. Shame on you.

Some of the work being funded out of that $16,000+ has been discussed for years. It was one of the discussion points that came up during the field restructure meetings, along with the Redwood trees that were on the plans yet NEVER planted by the district down the common property line. But we got a new obnoxious scoreboard in!

As for not having kids in the district, perhaps that is true, but my taxes still go towards those schools utilized by my neighbor's children. That gives me the ability to have a voice in this discussion WITHOUT shame. I do care about the kids. They are our future. That's why I am thrilled "A Gatetree Circle Family" who voiced their concerns in the related thread no longer need to be worried for the safety of their 3 year old.

PUSD has long lived high on the hog from developer fees. Those fees are now dwindling with the town being close to build out. They are being forced to look to traditional sources of funding which are also in short supply. Eliminating the Public Information Officer salary from PUSD might go a long way towards funding the work under discussion. It might even leave a few dollars on the table to purchase items that directly enhance the quality of education the kids receive. Example: Media & Technology is only 2% of the General Fund budget. General Administration is 5.6%, with School Administration at 4.8%. Seems a tad off balance to me.

Too bad this topic is the one that has apparently forced many into reality. Before claiming this money to be a waste, perhaps you should review the District Budget via the following Web Link and look at where there the educational dollars are being allocated, IF education is your real issue/concern.

Thank you ANOTHER Gatetree resident for calling your neighbor on their misrepresentation of the facts. They are in need of the reality check. Yes the district does have less funds for education which is why forcing their hand to spend $16700 on a walkway is truly a waste. Suggesting a postion be eliminated to pay for the walkway is absurd. Even if the position was eliminated the point is the money should be spent on education. Again, re-opening the field gate would cost nothing.
Stating the mother now need not be worried about the safety of her 3 year old is a riduculous statement as well. A mother always needs to be concerned for her children's safety and I'm sure residents of the street will still drive by this child's home, and the mailman and delivery trucks and the garbage trucks and so on.
This resident must feel guilty for exaggerating their claims to AVHS and is trying to push any idea to lessen their guilt. Obviously they don't care about AVHS kids, "our future", who would like the gate re-opened.

I feel guilty about nothing. And if the AVHS kids would really like the gate reopened, why weren't THEY at the meeting?

And FYI -- I misrepresented nothing. It's simply MY perspective. I don't ask, nor care, that you agree or disagree.

FYI -- A call was just made to the Pleasanton PD. My husband was coming into Gatetree Circle using the "non-Amador" side of the loop. Some kid in a late model blue Pathfinder came speeding around the corner, riding well over his side of the street, and when the kid realized he was over the line, he had the gall to play chicken with my husband. Fortunately for the kid, he realized he'd lose the game.

If anyone knows who this kid is, I'd love details so we can update Pleasanton PD. Feel free to e-mail me via Yahoo at gatetreecircle@yahoo.com

Thank you.
