Four EBAL wrestlers earn NCS championship titles

LHS's Cowan, who overcame a fractured neck, rolls to the title with majority decision

Four East Bay Athletic League wrestlers came away with North Coast Section championships the weekend of Feb. 18-19.

The tournament was held at James Logan High and was the qualifier for the CIF State meet to be held Feb. 24-26 at the Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

There will be many EBAL wrestlers taking their skills south for the meet -- four will be carrying the “NCS Champ” tag.

At 113 pounds, Tallon Chambers of Livermore knocked off Anthony Anderson of Liberty 9-2 in the finals. That was followed at 120 pounds with De La Salle’s Bobby Cuevas beating Austin Fredrickson of Windsor 4-2 in the finals.

The next EBAL winner came in the 138 pound division when Henry Baalman of Dublin held off Chris Acuna of Benicia in the finals by a 3-1 margin.

Cowan mowed through his opponents in the tournament. The first round saw his pin Kai Ayre in 37 seconds, then he followed that with another pin, this one in 2:55 over Dante Benedetti of Freedom.

In the quarterfinals, Cowan took out Kaewett Nelson of Hoopa with an 18-3 technical fall.

In the semifinals, it was a 16-3 majority decision over Logan Bruce of Maria Carrillo.
