Public meeting to hear Vintage Hills traffic concerns

Weekday traffic on Palomino, Touriga drives now tops 2,000 vehicles a day

With traffic on Touriga and Palomino drives in upper Vintage Hills now averaging more than 2,000 vehicles a day, Pleasanton traffic engineers have scheduled a public hearing July 26 to hear what neighbors along these busy routes want to do about it.

As a long time Crellin Rd. resident I can tell you that speed humps are mostly ineffective. Some slow down, most drivers divert to other streets without humps, and some find the humps a challenge to see just how fast they can go over them. Stand at the corner of Montevino and Crellin on any given day, usually between 3 - 6 p.m. and you will be amazed at how fast some of the cars go, both up and down Crellin Rd. These are not just teenagers as some might expect; in fact, most are not teenagers but adults in sporty cars or big SUV's that barely feel the impact of the bumps. Then notice the traffic calming measures taken on Montevino; planter boxes in the middle of the intersection with trees, etc. Certainly a more beautiful traffic slowing measure. Be very clear, my neighbors, about what you want because traffic humps, and the ugly signage that goes with them, are not the solution!

City engineer, Joshua Pack, has been very responsive to my concerns regarding additional speed bumps in the neighborhood and I appreciate his efforts. His statistics show speeds have reduced on my street, but statistics do not always tell the whole story. Traffic diversion is really what has reduced the average speeds on my street. Unfortunately Crellin is stuck with the speed humps, but I implore you to look for other solutions that preserve the safety and beauty of the neighborhood. Ask them at the meeting on Thursday how Montevino got planter boxes with trees and why; be sure to look at all possibilities before agreeing to speed humps.

I suppose the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence. After living on Montevino for the last 20 years, let me tell you that the planter boxes (there are 2) are totally and completely useless.... they speed like crazy on Montevino. Witness the 2AM overturn by some young teenager who did not make the bend at the top of the hill.... I clock people doing 40 very often (you figure out how)... mother's racing their kid(s) to school, single occupant drivers racing to work, etc. Then, later in the day the same ones are racing in the opposite direction.

They should put in a few roundabouts. Speed around those and you'll topple over!

My take from the few messages in this thread and from the previous thread is there isn't a single solution. As I stated in my earlier comment, we live across the street from WG Elem on Black Ave, 1/2 a mile down from the Post Office. Franco and CR Resident have the same problem that we experience, school traffic, cut-through traffic, Post Office traffic = a speeding problem. "Humps" or bumps are only part of the solution. Pleasanton Police need to get serious about this problem all over town. We've had an infrequent motorcycle cop down a side street (by that I mean 1x every 9 months) who writes 3 tickets in 20 mins and then we don't see him again. How about 3-4 officers picking certain areas on an on-going, rotating basis and send a message that Pleasanton is serious about the problem? Demonstrate to the community that we, as a community, through PPD and the City, are serious about the problem and people will eventually slow down (and maybe cite a few people for texting and talking while driving while they are at it.)

I agree with Guest. Roundabouts DO work. Unfortunately some had to be taken down at an exhorbitant price due to some "inconvenienced" residents who didn't like them.

I hope you are not waiting for the police to help you. With the budget cuts and loss of officer head count due attrition and rich retirement deals for their unions, now there are less police available to monitor speeding down city roads.

As a Touriga Drive resident, I appreciate the feedback from the residents with "humps" and "planters." I don't want those on our street.

I don't believe Touriga Drive is wide enough for roundabouts and they would be ugly. Would you like to be the homeowner who has one in front your house? We have an RV and that would be a joke to get around a small roundabout, much less the large delivery trucks. Let's be mindful not punish the residents of Touriga who obey the law.

A solar speed alert sign going UP the street would be helpful, along with increased patrol issuing tickets. I like the above suggestion of a rotating/on-going ticketing by motorcyle officers. Especially during commute/school hours coming & going.

Let's be safe everyone, slow down and enjoy the ride!

What’s the final destination of these 2000 vehicles? Livermore and beyond or are they residents trying to get to work, school, and home? Residents can solve part of the problem by forming carpools and walk-pools, reducing the number of vehicles on the road, at least in terms of getting children back and forth to school. If commuters are impacting the neighborhood roads on their way through and out of town, I’m not sure what the solution would be other than to build some kind of bypass road. Most people need incentives (or consequences) before they’ll change their behaviors. If the issue also includes traffic violations, short of setting up a camera that records violators and sending them a nice fat ticket, or police standing at all the impacted streets, don't know how they can reduce or prevent traffic around here. We can all toss in our two cents as residents, but hopefully the Traffic Engineers, the professionals, will come prepared with suggestions and solutions.

This is by no means targeted at any one in particular, but how is having a roundabout that has plants in it more ugly than having an RV on the street?

Touriga has been a race track for years. With the amount of cars that seem to be going through this area, wouldn't stop signs create even more congestion, with irate people honking, not yielding to pedestrians, many doing the California roll stop etc etc? I also read the other thread associated with this topics; someone said something about busing the thousands of people in from Ruby Hills. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Ruby Hills is supplying thousands of kids to Vintage Hills.

My take on all this: speeders are going to be speeders. Watch out for yourself. I grew up around the corner from Black Ave and people still speed down that street even though there's a few stop signs. There isn't going to a be solution that everyone is happy with.

what about ticket cameras?
when i'm in a rush going through our neighborhoods I remind myself that a child could jump out into the street so am paranoid and keep my speed low.
i have two highschoolers that i worry could get hit by a car when they walk to and from the bus stop just on concord street. same for palomino.
