A gas line break closed the intersection of First Street and Vineyard Avenue for several hours Thursday morning.
Police shut down the intersection around 10:45 a.m. and advised motorists to avoid the area. The area was reopened at 2:02 p.m.
PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said the gas leak was caused by a construction crew working in the area around 10:30 a.m.
“Safety is our top priority,” she said.
An excavator appeared to have dug into a gas line, and utility crews stopped the flow of gas at 12:07 p.m., she said. The road closures lasted until shortly after the gas line was repaired.
Pleasanton police Lt. Brian Laurence said the 76 and Shell gas stations at the intersection and businesses in Pleasant Plaza were closed temporarily.
Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department battalion chief Mike Miller said there were no injuries as a result of the leak.
“Our goal is really to get this cleaned up before the evening rush hour,” he said.
Sarkissian said residents should always call 811 before planning a digging project — large or small — to see what utility lines exist before breaking ground.
Maybe Sarkissian should advise the Careless contractor to call 811.!! The average Pleasanton resident doesn’t even dig on their property. Pay top dollar for these so called professionals to make the same mistake a untrained person can do. First St. Is already WAY over traveled from the valley commuters doing their so called “short cut”. Errors like this just compound the existing problem. Does City Council ever leave their meeting room to see all the congestion ?
I have smelled gas on my property for about a year or more and no one can find out where the smell is coming from. Even my neighbors have smelled it and still no one can find it. Sometimes it is strong and sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes you can’t even smell it. P,G & E are baffled after using their top of the line equipment, pulling in the top brass and still they have no answers. I am a little nervous about it and don’t know who to trust, my nose or people I don’t know.
