Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The annual Mr. Amador show will be held at 5 p.m. and again at 7:45 p.m. tonight in the Amador Theater on the campus of Amador Valley High School.

The student-run competition, now in its 11th year, features 10 contestants who will showcase their talents. The goal is to impress the audience enough to buy their vote by placing money in the contestants’ individual donation boxes located in the lobby, where there will also be a silent auction. The auction will include a basketball donated by the Warriors and signed by the team.

This isn’t your typical contest of talent or other pageant-like elements. It’s all about cash. Cash for a very worthy cause, that is.

All of the proceeds will be donated to the George Mark Children’s House, a palliative care facility located in San Leandro. Caregivers there provide

compassionate care for children and their families who are facing devastating medical issues.

Since families at Mark’s Children’s House never see a bill, Mr. Amador’s donation of $27,575 from last year’s show helped with expenses. The goal this year is to raise at least $30,000.

The student-run program involves hundreds of volunteer hours. Co-directors Bailey Little and Aubrey Krieger start planning in the summer, with the Mr. Amador committee and selected 10 boys joining them in December. During twice-weekly practices, the boys must learn several choreographed dances, plan and practice individual talents to perform at the show and participate in several key fundraisers during the season.

It’s challenging to balance their already-busy schedules with these additional commitments, but they do it beautifully and without complaint.

Little said the 10 boys selected for this year’s competition represent the best of Amador spirit and recognize the truly remarkable service the George Mark Children’s House provides.

Monday night’s two shows will culminate the Mr. Amador’s team’s months of work, ending with a live auction where everyone can bid for the opportunity to go on a date with one of the 10 boys. The title of Mr. Amador 2016 goes to the contestant who raises the most money.

Tickets for both shows are available online at http://mramadorcommittee.wix.com/mramador2016/ and at the door.
