A Pacific storm system is expected to approach the Bay Area today, causing widespread rainfall throughout the region with heavy rain possible, especially along the coast.

The National Weather Service said thunderstorms may be possible by late Wednesday afternoon and evening with lingering showers lasting through Thursday morning.

Wind speeds are also set to increase this morning, peaking during the afternoon and early evening at speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour and with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph in elevated areas.

A secondary, smaller weather system will then pass through the North Bay on Friday, bringing a chance of light rain to the area, the weather service said.
