Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s popular lecture presentations return Saturday with the focus on woman in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The free program will offer four lectures on the theme, with identical presentations at 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. every Saturday through Feb. 27 in the Bankhead Theater, located at 2400 First St. in Livermore.
Each lecture will highlight cutting-edge science presented by leading Lab researchers who are joined by high school science teachers.
Kicking off the series on Feb. 6 will be “Behold Livermorium: A Quest for New Elements,” by lab scientist Dawn Shaughnessy and teacher Katherine Huang of Dougherty Valley High School.
They will discuss how scientists create new elements, and how their nuclear and chemical properties compare to their naturally-occurring counterparts.
They will also discuss the journey from element discovery to element naming, culminating with the official naming of element 116 as Livermorium in honor of the scientists and research that has been done at the Livermore lab since its discovery.
Other lectures that follow are:
Feb. 13: “iCHIP: Human Physiology in the Palm of Your Hand,” by lab scientists Elizabeth Wheeler and Monica Moya and teacher Erin McKay of Tracy High School.
Feb. 20: “Harnessing Fusion: Creating a Sun on Earth,” by lab scientist Tammy Ma and teacher Tom Shefler of Granada High School.
Feb. 27: “From Basketball and Medicine to Climate: Understanding the World through Statistics,” by lab scientist Ana Kupresanin and teacher Richard Newton of Tracy High School.
The lectures and demonstrations, sponsored by the Livermore Lab’s Science Education program, are targeted to middle and high school students. Seating is on a first-come basis. There is no pre-registration.
The lecture series will be available at a later date via the lab’s YouTube channel. A student worksheet outlining each talk also will soon be available on the Science on Saturday website http://education.llnl.gov/students/science-on-Saturday/
