Many Pleasanton neighborhoods will throw block parties, barbecues and other festivities across town tonight in celebration of National Night Out, a countrywide event aimed at crime prevention.

Members of the Pleasanton City Council, city staff and police officers will visit some parties upon request so residents can get to better know police and city leaders.

The annual event was started years ago to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention, generate support for local crime prevention programs and to strengthen neighborhood spirit.

“Neighborhood watch is an important element in crime prevention. They are the eyes and ears of the city,” said Police Officer Archie Chu.

City leaders get a chance to get to know residents one-on-one and to talk with kids in a relaxed environment. It helps residents “get to know officers as people, not just uniforms,” Chu said.

  1. It would probably be helpful if people knew WHERE some of these events were being held! How about if people comment to share what they know about where they know some of the local National Night Out gatherings are happening?

I know there is one at St. Clare’s Church, across Hopyard from the Sports Park.

  2. @Ed, The whole point is to meet and get to know the people in your neighborhood. Start a Neighborhood Watch if their isn’t one in your neighborhood. The official time is 5:30 till 8:30 PM.

  3. These are neighborhood get togethers for people who live in that neighborhood, so you get to know your neighbors. They are put on by individuals in Neighbor Watch groups, homeowner associations and the like. They are not put on by the police dept. or any city dept. However the police dept. does furnish many helpful suggestions and a form explaining how to plan an event. The police, fire and city depts. visit the events so you can meet and get to know them. If you don’t see any signs of an event in your neighborhood then start thinking of planning an event yourself with a few of your neighbors for next year. It is always the first Tuesday night in August. Contact Crime Prevention at the police dept. and they will give you all the info you need.

  4. As others have said, it is up to each neighborhood to host its own party. We will be getting together on Ridgewood Road tonight at 6:00-? 🙂

  5. On behalf of all street residents I welcome the police to the Home Depot Parking Lot !! Can we get a ride in the police car ?
