Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, recently participated in a congressional visit to Lebanon and Turkey.
In trips to Beirut, Lebanon and Ankara, Turkey, Swalwell met with senior foreign officials in joint efforts with the United States against ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as ISIS).
Swalwell’s meetings included conversations with commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces Jean Kahwaji, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu.
“In Lebanon, I shared my appreciation for the cooperation between the Lebanese Army and the United States in the fight against ISIL and other terrorist groups. I continued to underscore the importance of working together to defeat ISIL, a threat to the region and the United States,” Swalwell, whose district includes Pleasanton, said in a statement after his return July 3.
“Turkey has long been a strategic partner with the United States,” he added. “While they have assisted with the fight against ISIL, I expressed to its leaders my concern that there is more that Turkey can do — in partnership with the U.S. and coalition allies — to stop foreign fighters from passing through Turkey’s borders onto the Iraqi and Syrian battlefields.”
