Pleasanton residents are invited to enjoy free movies during six Thursday evenings this summer, on July 9, 16, 23, and 30, and August 6 and 13.
Mark Duncanson, the city’s recreation coordinator, said all films will be shown at dusk at Amador Valley Community Park, located at 4301 Black Avenue, on a giant screen that measures 26 feet diagonally. All films scheduled are rated PG.
The 23-acre park is centrally located and features picnic/barbeque facilities, two play structures, plenty of open space and ample parking. Films are shown on the grassy area directly behind the Dolores Bengtson Aquatic Center.
Seating will be cordoned off in sections with blanket seating in the front, low-back beach chairs in the center, and camp chairs and other higher positioned seating in the rear, to accommodate for the best viewing. No blankets or chairs are allowed on the lawn area prior to 10 a.m.
The 6th annual summer film season kicks off on Thursday, July 9 with Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, the adventure comedy directed by Tim Burton and starring Paul Reubens as Pee-Wee Herman. The film is a retelling of the 1948 Italian classic, The Bicycle Thief! and tells the tale of Pee-Wee’s nationwide adventure in search of his stolen bicycle.
Next up on Thursday, July 16, is The Neverending Story, a magical journey about the power of a young boy’s imagination to save a dying fantasyland through the pages of a mysterious book. This much-loved kid’s adventure is the first in a trilogy, and, at the time of its release, was the most expensive film produced outside of the United States or the USSR.
Big Hero 6 comes to Movies in the Park on Thursday, July 23. This computer-animated superhero comedy film is the 54th in the Walt Disney Animated Classic series. The storyline was inspired by the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name and tells the story of a young robotics prodigy who forms a superhero team to combat a masked villain.
Maleficent, features Angelina Jolie in the story of Disney’s iconic villain from Sleeping Beauty and is scheduled on Thursday, July 30. The film, which was one of the top grossing movies of 2014, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design at the 87th Academy Awards.
On Thursday, August 6, the classic family favorite Back to the Future shows at Movies in the Park. Written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, Back to the Future was the highest grossing film of 1985 and has since gone on to become an international phenomenon.
The season wraps up on Thursday, August 13 with the 2014 blockbuster film Into the Woods, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. This musical combines the plots of several fairytales by the Brothers Grimm, and garnered three Academy Award nomination.
