Don’t be surprised when you walk into the Pleasanton public library Saturday and see the staff dressed for a trip.
Their costumes will be coordinated with the library’s summer program, “Destination Read.”
Each year, a theme is selected for the reading incentive game which is enhanced with decorations throughout Children’s Library area. At 10 a.m. tomorrow, the opening day of the program, children of all ages can sign up to participate in the program, becoming read-happy tourists by completing 10, 20 and 30 hours of reading and becoming eligible for prizes. The reading must be completed by Aug. 2.
Last summer, approximately 4,000 Pleasanton youngsters participated in the Summer Reading Program.
Research shows that children who continue to read during the summer months avoid the “summer slide” and retain or improve upon the skills they acquired during the school year.
Besides the summer reading program, the library will sponsor other events.
The musical beat of Mary Spalding’s Caribbean drum trio Steel Jam kicks off Wow Wednesdays on June 17 at 2 p.m. Free summer movies are scheduled on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and are perfect for ages 7 years old and up. Space is limited and all programs will require a ticket that can be claimed (at no cost) at the Children’s Desk, one half-hour before the start of each show.
