“Dancing Harp Strings”, a concert featuring the winners of Northern California’s Yvonne La Mothe biannual harp competition, will perform at the Firehouse Arts Center in Pleasanton at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The competition winners, ranging in age from 9 to 18 years old, will perform music by famous harpists of the past during the concert — presented by the Bay Area Chapter of the American Harp Society.
Parisian harp maker of the 18th century F.J. Naderman and the touring 19th century virtuoso Felix Godefroid are two of the late harpists whose music will be performed during the event, according to concert organizers.
Living harpists and teachers will also be represented during the program at the downtown Pleasanton venue located at 4444 Railroad Ave., including master teacher Susann MacDonald from Indiana University and Linda Wood Rollo from Los Gatos.
Guest performer and past harp competition winner Arrielle Herman from Walnut Creek is set to close out the concert with a performance of “Introduction and Allegro” by Ravel accompanied by six colleagues from the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra on flute, clarinet, violin, viola and cello, organizers said.
The concert title, “Dancing Harp Strings,” refers to the notion that practicing the harp is like learning dance steps for the fingers, according to concert organizer and Bay Area harpist Dominique Piana.
