Just three weeks after being stabbed in downtown Pleasanton, Cameron “CamCam” Gipson had his shot at stardom on a national TV show.

“We were just relieved he recuperated really fast,” said Gipson’s mother, Corina Liscano. “It was just a blessing he was able to be on the show.”

That show, 106 and Park, aired Wednesday on BET. It does a countdown of the latest hip hop and rap videos and features potential future stars in a three-way competition.

“They’re just like VH1, but more hip, more up to date,” Liscano explained. Like most shows of its kind, viewers get to call in and vote for the performer they liked best, and about 30 of Cameron’s supporters gathered Wednesday afternoon at Round Table Pizza on Main Street, phones in hand, waiting for the show.

The local viewing was set up by CamCam’s dad, Byron Gipson, who manages the 16-year-old rapper. Father and son were in New York for the show, leaving Liscano behind to run the local push. Just before the show was due to air, she went table to table checking that the teens had phones and were ready to vote.

“Does everybody know what to do when the show comes on?” Liscano asked members of the teenage crowd. She said CamCam has been working toward this day for years.

“Cameron has been doing music since he was 8,” Liscano said. “He’s 16, he doesn’t use any curse words at all — we just don’t allow that.”

Results of the voting weren’t immediately available.

  1. Neighbor: The kid was stabbed, what do you think he deserves?? What actions? You’re obviously another hateful lifelong Pleasantonian, aka, Teaparty member.

  2. Seeing how most people out there don’t know the whole story behind the stabbing of two innocent teens and i say innocent because no matter the situation noone deserves to be stabbed, shot, etc. Also the two teens that were stabbed were not seen or found with any kind of weapons on them.Cameron the young Hip Hop artist has had long notiriety and it is ignorant for the person who mentioned Cameron using this to his benefit.

  3. Garcia admitted stabbing teenager Cameron Gipson on Sept. 15. He denied stabbing Dawayne Barnes, although he told police he would have “if he had the chance,” court records show. Obviously this teen “Victor Garcia” has no kind of remorse as observed in his own statement above.

  4. The person that spoke about accountability obviously did not read the article. They just saw Hip hop, rapper, and stabbing and automatically thought that Cam Cam did something wrong.I suggest you go back and read it clearly and if you don’t get it, read the article that was printed earlier so you can get it. This young man was a victim of a near fatal stabbing and within 3 weeks had the will and determination to follow his dream and perform on stage regardless of any physical pain or mental stress caused by this attempt to take his life.

  5. The 16-year-old is being held on $260,000 bail. He’s charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, each of which can carry a sentence of up to four year in state prison. Garcia is also charged with inflicting great bodily injury, which could carry an additional sentence of three years, of committing a violent felony, which could add another three years, and under a state statute that prohibits plea bargaining in certain violent crimes. You do the crime be prepared to do the time as the saying goes, wich i believe in.

  6. Of course no one deserves to be violently harmed by another. However don’t be so naive and think that when two teens go to fight one teen that the one teen is not scared (even if he won’t admit it) and he may think of a way to even up his odds. Teens and young adults have a very hard time thinking through these situations rationally. Let’s face it…the victims had a BIG hand in creating this violence for themselves. This was not a random act of violence…all 3 of these boys made a horribly bad decision that day.

I have heard for years from my kids how talented CamCam is. I hope him and every other teen takes away from this that instead of getting involved in such non-sense they would be better off staying away from stupid situations and focusing on their schooling, interests and talents.

I heard the voting for the talent winner was very close, keep at it Cameron, as long as you focus on learning and growing your talent and there will nothing to stop you from having a great life.

  7. The boys who ended up being “victims” where the original aggressors. They meant to outnumber and harm another boy. They are not innocent an should not benefit from the incident by being celebrated.
I am glad they have made good recoveries.
