A crime ranking survey released Monday lists Oakland as the fifth most dangerous city in the U.S.

The annual survey by CQ Press, a division of SAGE Publications, ranked Oakland as the fifth most dangerous city and nearby Richmond sixth. Oakland’s No. 5 ranking is an improvement over last year, when it ranked third.

Among other Bay Area cities, Vallejo was No. 33, Salinas was No. 57, Antioch was No. 91, Berkeley was No. 111, San Francisco was No. 130, San Jose was No. 237 and Santa Rosa was No. 242.

CQ Press said its crime rate rankings are based on six categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors said in a statement Monday that the list is “a premeditated statistical mugging of America’s cities.”

Houston Mayor Annise Parker, who chairs the U.S. Conference of Mayors, said, “These rankings present a gross misuse of FBI data. Everyone with the slightest knowledge of this issue knows the rankings are not credible, but the publication persists with them, presumably because rankings are popular and sell books.”

The Conference of Mayors said the rankings “provide no insight into the many variables that mold the crime in a particular town, city, county, state, region or other jurisdiction.”

It also said the list isn’t an accurate predictor of a person’s crime risk because it doesn’t take into consideration factors such as age, lifestyle and the neighborhood were a person lives.

  1. I wonder if the rankings of Oakland and Richmond have anything to do with the demographics of who lives there? I know it’s not politically correct to say, but you can’t ignore it. It’s best to avoid both cities, isnce thye are busy killing each other and you might risk being caught in the crossfire.
But, hey, both cities are very diverse, so that makes liberals feel less guilty.

  2. San Leandro, Hayward and Castro Valley are beginning to be as dangerous. The entire East Bay is being taken over by the celebration of thuggery and glorification of ignorance, driving dangerously, unprovoked assault and murder, jail time, marijuana use, gang membership and welfare dependency over education, hard work and being a law-abiding, productive member of society. Question that, and you’re immediately labeled a “racist.”

Fortunately, that crap hasn’t started in Pleasanton – I hope it never does.

  3. Thank you Steve for demonstrating racism is alive and well in Pleasanton today. You are smug and ignorant. Your statements have nothing to do with political correctness, but plain old racism. Why don’t you volunteer for some organizations that help folks in these areas where the key “demographics” are poverty and hopelessness to expand the narrow perspective you obviously have.

  4. Steve , it is not un=pc…it is just ignorant. It shows your over simplistic view of the world. It shows that you have a need to defend your racist thoughts. I have worked in Oakland for 29 years. Never have I had anything “bad” happen to me. Most of this is gang-related, drug-related.
Hey maybe it’s the “demographics that has to do with the murders at Castlewood, or the child rape occurring in Livermore with the dentist’s wife, or the Ponzi schemes that have ripped people off of millions of dollars by Pleasanton’s residents…. please…crap happens and people are responsible…people….not skin color. jerk.
