Votes in the protracted ballot count in the 11th Congressional District apparently stopped late Friday, with results late that day continuing to show only a slight increase in the totals for the three candidates: Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-California), his Republican challenger David Harmer, and American Independent Party candidate David Christensen.

As of 6:20 p.m. Friday in the most recent report issued by her office, California Secretary of State Debra Bowen reported that McNerney continues to lead Harmer by less than 1%, a percentage difference that has remained the same for more than a week. Meanwhile, county registrars in the four counties the 11th District represents are continuing to count absentee and provisional ballots taken to polling places on Election Day Nov. 2, but not counted at the time.

Bowen’s office reported that although all three candidates has slight numerical gains Wednesday, the change was not significant enough to affect the 0.9% lead McNerney has over Harmer. As of Wednesday afternoon, McNerney had received 111,438 votes, or still at 47.9%, Harmer had 109,655 votes, or 47.0%, and Christensen had 11,943 votes, or 5.1%.

Both McNerney and Harmer were in Washington, D.C. last week but returned as Congress recessed for the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

    I agree that the reason the GOP did not do better this election even though the democrats are not too popular is because they have the extreme right running the show.

    I know I did not vote for Harmer because of his extreme views on social issues. Had the GOP put a moderate candidate against McNerney, he/she might have won (I would have voted for such a candidate and instead voted for McNerney to keep extremes like Harmer away from Washington)

    I think it is silly for Harmer to have gone to Washington, it is almost a sure thing that McNerney will win, and no, it was not election fraud like some tea party folks claim

  4. Resident: your letter just shows how effective McNerney’s big lie campaign was. Harmer is NOT extreme. Many of the charges from the Mcnerney crew were just plain stupid. What is REALLY silly is McNerney’s claiming victory when the votes are not all counted.

  5. McNerney is continued his percentage lead and with the number of votes that McNerney leads with it is not possible for Harmer to win. It no longer matters if Harmer is a extreme or not the votes are in.

  6. Our fine Congressman Jerry McNerney has increased his vote count lead to 2474 votes and increased his percentage lead to over 1%. It is not possible for him to be defeated. Another round of cheers for Jerry and have a great Thanksgiving holiday.
