A handful of Livermore police officers spent the weekend greeting shoppers at local big-box retailers and collecting school supplies for their second annual “Stuff the Cruiser” backpack drive.
The officers asked shoppers entering Walmart, Target and OfficeMax to purchase and donate packs other items for local children in need.
“People were very receptive, and they went out of their way picking out nice items and keeping our kids supplied,” Sgt. John Hurd said.
Tonight, about 25 volunteers will gather at police headquarters to sort the donations and stuff the backpacks with supplies.
“It’ll be quite the circus,” Hurd said.
The packs will then be distributed to children selected by the Police Department’s family counseling unit, Hurd said.
Hurd said he anticipates that about 220 backpacks will be given away this year.
Additional donations are welcome until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Items can be dropped off at police headquarters at 1110 S. Livermore Ave.
“Come by the front lobby, we’d be happy to take it,” Hurd said. “With the economy the way it is, everybody needs a little bit of help.”
