Pleasanton Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi (D-18th) and the Oakland Police Officers Association will host a memorial sign dedication ceremony this morning to unveil the Sgt. Daniel Sakai Oakland Police Department Memorial Highway.
As directed by a resolution authored by Hayashi, the Castro Valley portion of Interstate Highway 580 was renamed to honor the memory of Sakai, who was one of four Oakland police officers who were killed in a confrontation with wanted parolee Lovelle Mixon on March 21, 2009.
The others were Sgts. Mark Dunakin and Ervin Romans and Officer John Hege.
Hayashi said in a statement, “Only 35 years old, Sgt. Sakai had already lived a life of great honor and courage. The memorial highway will allow us to continue to learn from his example, and demonstrate our eternal gratitude to the Sakai family for his service and sacrifice.”
The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. with a freeway ceremony on eastbound I-580 near the Strobridge Avenue exit in Castro Valley. A public sign dedication ceremony will follow at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts at 10 a.m.
The public is invited to attend and people may call (510) 583-8818 to reserve seats.
Hayashi has introduced another resolution this year to rename the Keller Avenue Bridge over Interstate 580 in Oakland in honor of the other three fallen Oakland Police officers.
