Travelers passing through San Francisco International Airport will likely enjoy free wireless Internet service as soon as this summer.
The San Francisco Airport Commission on Tuesday approved a pilot program to provide free Internet access throughout SFO, a plan that could be implemented by summer 2010, according to an announcement released by the mayor’s office.
“Ensuring free and unfettered access to the Internet will keep SFO at the cutting edge of international travel as well as the information superhighway,” San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said in a statement.
Getting online at SFO currently costs $7.99 for a 24-hour pass or $6 for a one-hour pass.
Free wireless service is already a feature at Mineta San Jose International and Oakland International airports.
Before the free wireless pilot program is finalized, it needs to be approved by the San Francisco City Purchaser, according to the mayor’s office.
